In the face of complex societal challenges and democratic crises, this roundtable will critically examine the role of universities in times of upheaval and uncertainty. What is the responsibility of universities in times of social unrest? How can universities best serve their communities and future generations?
You are cordially invited to the University of Ljubljana's roundtable discussion titled Universities in times of social (dis)order: Regional perspectives. The roundtable will be held as part of the four-day international conference ECC 2024, organized by the Slovenian Communication Association, the Faculty of Social Sciences, and ECREA (European Communication Research and Education Association)and ECREA.
Moderated by Vice-Rector Prof. Dr. Ksenija Vidmar Horvat and Prof. Dr. Ivan Svetlik, the discussion will feature representatives from the Rector's Conference of Southeast Europe and the Western Balkans. The discussion will draw upon UNESCO’s influential report, Reimagining Our Futures Together: A New Social Contract for Education (2021), which calls for a renewed cooperation between society and education.
In the face of complex societal challenges and democratic crises, this roundtable will critically examine the role of universities in times of upheaval and uncertainty. What is the responsibility of universities in times of social unrest? How can universities best serve their communities and future generations? How is the historical role of the university shifting in response of today's contemporary realities, and what new roles must it take on? The discussion will highlight experiences and insights from the region, contributing to a broader global perspective.
Participants will discuss, among other things, the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration, future-proof competences, and the growing resistance to science and scientific institutions.
