In 2018, the University of Ljubljana joined EUTOPIA – European University Alliance, an international association of European universities that strives to develop a new model of integrated European higher education institutions through transnational cooperation. The alliance brings together ten European universities and six global partners, which together create an open, diverse, and multicultural higher education space.

One of the key instruments for shaping the new European Higher Education Area is the ambitious European Universities Initiative within the Erasmus+ program. The central project supporting the EUTOPIA alliance is the Erasmus+ EUTOPIA MORE project (2022–2026) and its predecessor, EUTOPIA2050 (2019–2022).
