The interdisciplinary doctoral study programme Art of the Academy of Fine Arts and Design (coordinator), the Academy of Music and the Academy of Theatre, Radio, Film and Television of the University of Ljubljana, which is implemented in cooperation with the Faculty of Biotechnics, the Faculty of Architecture and the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Engineering, lasts for 4 years and comprises 240 credits.

It is analogous to and equivalent to third-level education in science. It is linked to the field of science by its degree of systematicity, complexity and creativity, and is distinguished from it by the substantive, methodological, educational and evaluative aspects of its studies. An important common denominator between the two modalities of tertiary education is the research aspect, as the tertiary programme in the arts is also fundamentally research-based and research-led.

It is a continuation and development of the second cycle, which is centred on artistic research and the creation of highly skilled artists in various fields. The learning outcomes of the interdisciplinary PhD in Art are reflected in highly skilled artists (at both artistic and theoretical level), competent for internationally comparable artistic practice in their chosen field.
