The 22nd edition of the QS World University Rankings 2026, an international ranking of the world’s top universities, was released in June 2025. The University of Ljubljana (UL) was ranked in 535th place, moving even closer to the top 500. This year’s result represents UL’s best ranking for a decade. In the 2015 edition of the QS World University Rankings, it was ranked between 501st and 550th, while last year it placed 596th.
“I am extremely pleased with this year’s result, which confirms that we have made significant progress in recent years. We have risen almost 100 places in the rankings over the last two years, and the fact that more universities are included in the assessment each year makes this improvement even more impressive. This is undoubtedly due to our outstanding staff, their dedication, research excellence, and quality work at all levels. This achievement is proof that we are on the right track as an institution and that our efforts are being recognised internationally,” said the Rector of the University of Ljubljana, Prof. Dr Gregor Majdič.
The UL achieved its highest ranking again in the category of employment outcomes, placing 41st, which takes into account, among other factors, the employability rate of graduates. In this category, however, the UL dropped nine places compared to last year. In contrast, the UL improved its rankings in the categories of participation in international research networks (241st), academic reputation (414th), faculty–student ratio (431st), and sustainability (619th).
The results reflect, among other things, the efforts the UL is making to strengthen its engagement in the international research community, its inclusive and active participation in global networks, and its commitment to raising the international visibility of its study programmes. The results of the past two years demonstrate that this engagement is increasingly recognised externally, and that the UL is making strong progress in achieving its strategic goals in internationalisation.
The QS World University Rankings, one of the most recognised and respected university rankings worldwide, includes 1,501 universities, with 8,467 institutions involved in the assessment process.
