The University of Ljubljana maintains its position in the ARWU and THE World University Rankings

The University of Ljubljana (UL) has maintained its ranking from last year, placing among universities ranked between 501st and 600th in the 2025 ARWU publication of the world’s best universities (also known as the Shanghai Ranking). At the same time, it has retained its position in the group of universities ranked between 801st and 1000th in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2026 (THE WUR) for the sixth consecutive year. This places the UL in the top half of the world’s best universities, particularly noteworthy given that the total number of ranked institutions has increased by five percent compared to last year.
More than 2,500 higher education institutions were included in the assessment process for the ARWU 2025, published in August, and 1,000 of them were listed in the final ranking. In the latest edition of the THE WUR, published on 9 October, more than 3,100 universities participated, with a record 2,191 institutions listed – only the second time that more than 2,000 universities have been included.
Compared to last year, the University of Ljubljana has improved its scores in both the Teaching and Research Environment categories of the THE WUR. In the Teaching category, it is now ranked 962nd, 63 places higher than last year. In the Research category, it improved by 74 places, ranking 728th this year. Once again, the University of Ljubljana achieved its best result in Industry (research funding from industry, patents), where it ranks 534th, placing it in the top quarter of universities worldwide in this category.
THE WUR evaluates research-oriented universities in five main areas: Teaching, Research Quality, Research Environment, International Outlook and Industry. The ranking uses 18 indicators, with university reputation in teaching and the quality of research outcomes contributing most to the overall score. In comparison, the ARWU uses six indicators that place greater emphasis on the research performance of universities.
