The Faculty of Mathematics and Physics held its traditional Pi recitation and “Pi Bake” contests on Friday 13 March. The new PI-Pong category, which will be properly introduced next year, was also presented at the event.
The Faculty of Mathematics and Physics organised its traditional set of Pi-centred events, with 23 competitors entering the Pi recitation contest (the youngest was 8 and the oldest 82) and 30 the Pi Bake contest (21 came to the judging stage, with perhaps not all those who registered ending up baking).
Alongside the recitation and baking contests, the faculty also put together a varied educational programme that included an interactive explanation of Pi using the Monte Carlo method, a weather experiment showing how cyclones and anti-cyclones are created, and an interactive quiz. A new category, PI-Pong, designed in the form of a duel between two competitors, was introduced for the first time. Competitors take turns to recite Pi digits, in the manner of a ping-pong rally.
Eighteen-year-old Alja Dizdarević came out on top in the Pi recitation contest with 1,532 digits.
