The Slovenian Rectors’ Conference, the presidency of which is currently held by the University of Maribor, will host the annual conference and general assembly of the European University Association (EUA) at the University of Ljubljana on 15 and 16 April next year. This is the flagship event of Europe’s largest association of universities, and involves more than 900 institutions from 48 countries. It attracts between 400 and 500 participants every year, among them several hundred rectors of European universities. The University of Ljubljana’s selection as host was officially announced at this year’s EUA conference in Istanbul, with its Rector Prof. Dr. Gregor Majdič presenting details of the host organisation and city.
The EUA is a key to the establishment and maintenance of links within the European higher education arena, and has a significant impact on EU policies in the fields of higher education, research and innovation. It brings together universities, national rectors’ conferences and other university networks from all parts of Europe (not just the EU), drafts guidelines for a range of areas with relevance to universities (including open science, quality assurance and research security), conducts international university evaluations, and provides training for academic management staff. It also provides expert technical support, promotes the sharing of best practice and the results of its work at conferences, seminars, websites and publications, and responds to current developments in higher education as they arise in countries across the continent. The EUA also initiated the founding and is an active member of the Global University Associations Forum (GUAF), which has been connecting universities from around the world since 2021.
Being chosen to organise the EUA’s flagship event is an honour and important recognition for the University of Ljubljana in particular and for Slovenian universities in general. It strengthens the host’s reputation and international profile, widens its strategic links, and gives it greater influence in European discussions on the development of higher education. At the same time, the event will be an opportunity for participants to learn more about the Slovenian academic community’s best practices, innovations and areas of strategic focus, and engage with the latest trends, analyses and EUA recommendations in support of the strategic planning in the field of higher education.
