Portrait of dr Andrej Košmrlj

Andrej Košmrlj is an assistant professor at Princeton University, in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, and is a member of the Princeton Institute for the Science and Technology of Materials. He lives and works in the city of Princeton, NJ, USA.

Dr Košmrlj gained his education at the UL Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, where he graduated in physics on the mathematical physics course with an average grade of 10.0. During his studies he was involved in programming competitions. His team was five-time winner in the Slovenian university championship, and represented the UL in Central European competitions. He then went on to doctoral studies of physics at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) in the USA and gained further post-doctorate academic advancement at Harvard.

After completing his education he accepted an offer to work at Princeton, where he teaches at the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. His research interests extend to the fields of mechanics, biophysics and soft matter. He is also a member of numerous societies, including the American Physical Society (APS), the Materials Research Society (MRS), Society of Engineering Science (SES) and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM).

Over his career he has received numerous awards. For his successful work he received the NSF CAREER award, which is the most prestigious award of the American National Science Foundation for assistant professors who successfully link outstanding research to the education programme. He has also received several awards for his exceptional teaching at Princeton.
