Peter Jurgerc
Dr Peter Jurgec is a graduate of the Faculty of Arts and holds two doctorates in linguistics, from the University of Ljubljana and the University of Tromsø, Norway. He was a young researcher at the Institute for the Slovenian Language at the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts, and a post-doctoral researcher at the Meertens Institute in Amsterdam and at the University of Leiden. He was also a visiting professor for one year at Rutgers University in New Jersey.
Dr Jurgec is now Assistant Professor, Tenure-Stream at the Department of Linguistics of the University of Toronto. He is involved principally in generative phonology. As a scientist he sees the main objective of linguistics as understanding the construction of the languages of the world, and not transcribing and weighing up what is correct, better or wrong. Indeed language changes all the time, and the role of language scholars is to describe and explain these changes, and not to influence them. Dr Jurgec is also one of the authors of the Dictionary of Modern Slovenian (Slovar sodobnega slovenskega jezika SSSJ), a writer of professional and scientific articles in international journals such as Phonology, Linguistic Inquiry and Glossa, and a member of the editorial board of Slovenščina 2.0.
