No. You will be placed into a class based on your result on the placement test.
You will be notified about your class and about the beginning of the Slovene as a foreign language 1 course via email.
The only acceptable reason for changing your Slovene as a foreign language class is a scheduling conflict with one of your other classes. If this is the case, please notify the Year Plus administrator and ask him or her if you can change the class. You will be offered a place in in another class if available. If you have already met the instructor of your original class, it is polite to inform him or her about the change as well.
The Slovene as a foreign language course is a one-semester course with classroom time of 3 hours per week, meeting once a week. In addition to the weekly classroom meetings, 15 hours are spent outside the classroom: in the language lab, outside, at a gallery, museum, cinema, etc. The class size is usually about 20 students. The language of instruction is Slovene, but teachers (and students) use other languages that they are familiar with when necessary.
Attendance for the Slovene as a foreign language course is required. If you wish to take the exam to obtain 3 ECTS credit points, you must attend the class at least 80% of the time. This means that you have to participate in the course and the additional course-related activities regularly. In case of absence, you should notify your teacher.
In addition to regular active presence and additional activities, you will be expected to have at least one presentation and submit five written assignments, all in accordance with your teacher’s instructions. If all your coursework is completed, you can take the exam at the end of the semester. Your teacher will inform you about the learning materials that you will be using during one of the initial meetings of the class. You will be able to purchase the materials required at the Faculty of Arts bookshop or at another bookshop. Photocopying books is prohibited in Slovenia. The timetable for the course "Slovene as a Foreign Language – Lecturer's Course" is not publicly available. You will be informed about it in due time to your e-mail addresses.
It is held at the Faculty of Arts (Aškerčeva 2) and at other faculties of the University of Ljubljana.
Your teacher will inform you about the learning materials that you will be using during one of the initial meetings of the class. You will be able to purchase the materials required at the Faculty of Arts bookshop or at another bookshop. Photocopying books is prohibited in Slovenia.
When you enrol in the Year Plus module, you are automatically enrolled in the Slovene as a foreign language 2 course. If you complete the Slovene as a foreign language 1 course at the end of the first semester and pass the exam, you can participate in the Slovene as a foreign language 2 course in the second semester without any additional registration.
You will not receive a certificate for Slovene, but you will receive a certificate confirming that you have passed all the requirements of the Year Plus module.
You can only use the certificate in question for study purposes, in other words, for obtaining the ECTS credit points acquired in the Year Plus module (as an elective course), or for extending your student status after your first year of studying.
If you need a certificate of proficiency for Slovene for official purposes, you will need to pass the Slovene Language Exam at the Examination Centre of the Center for Slovene as a Second and Foreign Language.
You can get recognition for the ECTS credit points in the Year Plus module in the following ways:
- As an elective course within your degree programme in any year of study IF your study program offers the opportunity to choose an external elective course and IF faculty or academy recognizes the courses of the Year Plus module as an external elective course. It is best to check this at your faculty at the beginning of the academic year.
- For one year extension of student status, but only after the first year of studying. This right is not transferable to higher years.
Participation in the Year Plus module enables you to extend your student status if you also obtain the required 30 ECTS credit points in the first year of studying. In order to do this, you have to obtain a minimum of 6 ECTS credit points in the Slovene as a foreign language course. This means that you have to successfully complete two courses:
- the Slovene as a foreign language 1 course (3 ECTS credit points) in the first semester and the Slovene as a foreign language 2 course (3 ECTS credit points) in the second semester.
- You should obtain the remaining 24 ECTS credit points from the courses in your own degree programme.
The faculties and academies have different procedures for extending the student status; you are therefore advised to make enquiries at your own faculty or academy.
Extension of student status with the help of Year plus can only be applied after the first year of study in Slovenia. Later (in higher years of study) you cannot use this right.
No. If you obtain 30 ECTS credit points in the first year of study at the University of Ljubljana (that is 6 ECTS credit points in the Slovene as a foreign language course and 24 ECTS credit points from the courses in your degree programme), you can extend your student status for a year, but you cannot enrol in a higher year.
If you wish to take your knowledge of Slovene further or if you are not eligible for the Year Plus, you can still attend Slovene language courses offered at the Centre for Slovene as a Second and Foreign Language (UL FF).
