The opening of the University of Ljubljana (UL) Gallery was celebrated on June 14, 2023 as part of the UL Day of the Arts.

With the opening of the UL Gallery, we have gained a valuable space dedicated to the presentation of vibrant artistic, architectural, design and other creativity. Further activities in the premises of the Provincial Diet Mansion, which are used by the UL Gallery, will provide even greater support for the transfer of artistic activities and achievements.

During the exhibition period, the UL Gallery is open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 16:00 to 20:00. The entrance to the UL Gallery is located at 1 Vegova Street.

17/80 – Exhibition of Photographs from the Archive of Prof. Lucijan Bratuš on the Occasion of the 80th Anniversary of UL ALUO

On the occasion of the Day of the Arts UL and the 80th anniversary of the Academy of Fine Arts and Design, University of Ljubljana (UL ALUO), the UL Gallery opened the exhibition 17/80. Curated by UL ALUO students Lara Deotto Bat and Jernej Strmšek, the exhibition presented the archive of Lucijan Bratuš, a long-time professor at UL ALUO, who meticulously documented events at the Academy between 2001 and 2017. His snapshots, marked by immediacy, form an authentic document of the institution’s internal logic, capturing an atmosphere well known to students and staff.

UL ALUO exhibitions on the work of biologist and geneticist Paul Nurse and on design for an inclusive society

The celebration of the 80th anniversary of the Academy of Fine Arts and Design UL (UL ALUO) continued with the opening of two exhibitions at the UL Gallery: Paul Nurse: What Is Life?, presenting scientific and imaginative illustrations by UL ALUO students, and, on posters in front of the UL Rectorate, Illustrating the Invisible: Design for an Inclusive Society – Marine Organisms for the Visually Impaired, created within a UL ALUO project highlighting the importance of inclusive visual communication. The exhibitions were also part of the 2025 Festival of Food for the Brain, dedicated to the theme of biodiversity.

The exhibition by UL ALUO concluded the pilot project presenting works from the UL ALUO Art Collection and simultaneously opened the series of events celebrating the 80th anniversary of UL ALUO in 2025.

Exhibition celebrating Prof. Dr Karel Hinterlechner

In December 2024, the UL Gallery opened an exhibition by the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Engineering, University of Ljubljana marking the 150th anniversary of the birth of Prof. Dr. Karel Hinterlechner, a geologist and mineralogist, one of the founding figures of the University of Ljubljana, its rector, and a long-serving dean of the Technical Faculty.

An exhibition by a former student of the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Ljubljana, developed as part of her thesis research exploring the activities and occupations of older women living alone.

Glava kot gledališče

As part of the Day of the Arts UL 2024, the UL Gallery hosted the exhibition Glava kot gledališče, created by students of the Academy of Theatre, Radio, Film and Television, University of Ljubljana. The exhibition presents updated Rococo-style student portraits featuring unusual wigs and headpieces. The 26 lavish portraits were produced within the elective course Costume: Project 1 and 2 under the mentorship of Assist. Prof. Tina Kolenik.

Exhibition by Ema Kobal and Matej Zupan

As part of the Day of the Arts UL 2024, works by a printmaking student and a painting student of UL ALUO were exhibited in the corridor in front of the UL Gallery. Ema Kobal presented the work Face to Face under the mentorship of Assoc. Prof. Zora Stančič, while Matej Zupan presented Postavitev z rdečim pokrovom (Installation with a Red Lid), also under the mentorship of Assoc. Prof. Zora Stančič and co-mentorship of Prof. Žiga Kariž.

Exhibition of illustrations from the online monthly magazine kULturnica

The exhibition presented illustrations, or vignettes, created for kULturnica in 2022 and 2023 by the author of the newsletter’s visual identity, Prof. Milan Erič, as well as by students of UL ALUO under the mentorship of Assist. Prof. Suzi Bricelj.

Dušan Kirbiš: Essentia

On 23 November 2023, the UL Gallery opened the exhibition Essentia by Prof. Dušan Kirbiš, featuring works from very different periods of the career of one of Slovenia’s most versatile artists, whose defining characteristic is precisely his refusal to adhere to a single style. In 2023, Prof. Dušan Kirbiš also received the University of Ljubljana’s Golden Plaque for outstanding artistic achievements.

Kabinet čudes

In collaboration with the University of Ljubljana Arts Council, UL ALUO opened the exhibition Kabinet čudes as part of the European Researchers’ Night – Humanities, Rock! The exhibition was opened by Vice-Rector for the arts Prof. Matjaž Drevenšek and the project leader Assoc. Prof. Zora Stančič.

Three Exhibitions

The opening of the University of Ljubljana Gallery on 14 June as part of the UL Day of the Arts UL, was marked by three exhibitions. Spaces that were previously dedicated to fragments of the University of Ljubljana’s history became a venue for presenting contemporary artistic, architectural, design, and other creative practices.
