Non-EU citizens who intend to work or be employed in Slovenia have to arrange a temporary residence permit at least 90 days before their lawful stay in Slovenia (if applying from Slovenia) or six months before planned arrival to Slovenia (if applying from abroad).
How can I get it?
An application to obtain a permit may be submitted by you or your employer. You both also have the possibility of applying for an extension of the permit. You apply abroad for the first permit, and your employer can apply in Slovenia. In special cases, you can apply for the first permit in Slovenia. In special cases, your first residence in Slovenia for employment or work can be arranged in Slovenia, and you do not need to apply abroad to obtain the first permit for employment or work.
- One can submit an application at the Slovenian embassy in one’s home country along with documents that are needed for the process,
- A hosting institution can submit it here in Ljubljana. In that case you will have to give your fingerprints and make a certified copy of your passport at the embassy at some point,
- One who can legally reside in the Slovenia on the basis of a valid identity card, valid passport, residence permit issued by another EU Member State, or on the basis of a type C visa, may also apply for a first temporary residence permit in Slovenia, in person. In that case, one gets a confirmation paper that gives one a right to legally reside in Slovenia until the final decision on the application. Conditions for legal entry and legal residence are different for different non-EU countries, so that is something that needs to be checked.

Other important information
- You have to pick up the permit where you filed an application. Be careful! If you can enter Slovenia without a visa and you launched an application at the embassy abroad, and you arrive in Slovenia before the permit was issued, you will have to go back to your country to pick it up.
Therefore, if you can enter Slovenia without a visa, we recommend you launch an application once you are already here! Be sure to bring the required documents with you (especially police clearance). - At the administrative unit, they might speak only Slovene, so visit with someone who speaks Slovene
- Leave your telephone number and a telephone number of the person speaking Slovene (tutor, buddy).
- Check your email (also spam).
- Pick up the certificate when they call you, and after that register your place of residence (adress where you live) at the administrative unit - bring the documents needed to register (for example apartment contract, landlord's statement…)
