Vacant position: Higher Education Teacher – Assistant Professor (Docent) (D019008) (m/f),
at the Department of Visual Communication Design, within the Graphic Design study programme.

 

The selected candidate will be employed full-time for an indefinite period of time.

 

Expected start of employment: 1 October 2026, or when the selected candidate is appointed to the appropriate habilitation title required for the position.

 

Requirements

  • Doctorate (pre-Bologna) in a relevant field or recognition of significant works of art by the University of Ljubljana, or Doctorate (third-cycle Bologna programme) in a relevant field or recognition of significant works of art by the University of Ljubljana.
  • A valid habilitation title of the University of Ljubljana: Assistant Professor / Associate Professor / Full Professor in the field of Visual Communication Design.
  • The candidate fulfils this requirement if they hold a valid title of the University of Ljubljana or a valid title of visiting teacher in the relevant field.
    • If the candidate does not hold the required title at the time of application but fulfils the quantitative and qualitative requirements for election to the title according to the Criteria for Election to the Titles of Higher Education Teachers, Researchers and Associates of the University of Ljubljana (No. 012-1/20215 of 22 November 2022 and amendments), they may apply for the position. In this case, the application must include evidence of meeting the criteria in accordance with the above-mentioned rules and a statement confirming that, if selected by the selection committee, the application will also be considered as an application for election to the academic title or recognition of the title.
  • Active knowledge of English.
  • Knowledge of the Slovenian language at level B2 (CEFR). If the selected candidate does not meet this requirement at the time of employment, it must be fulfilled within three years after employment.

 

Preferred competencies:

Professional competencies

  • Professional expertise in visual communication design / graphic design.
  • At least seven years of relevant, independent and continuous artistic or research activity in the field of visual communications.
  • International professional engagement and recognition.
  • In-depth understanding of fundamental graphic design principles (composition, typography, content structure, relationship between content and form).
  • Mastery of design processes (research, analysis, concept development, implementation) and design production of print and digital communication formats.
  • Knowledge of production processes of analogue and digital media and competent use of relevant digital tools.

Teaching competencies:

  • Qualification for teaching in higher education.
  • Knowledge of modern teaching methods and the ability to plan, implement and evaluate the teaching process.
  • Ability to encourage conceptual thinking, critical reflection and student autonomy.
  • Ability to guide students in methodological work (research – analysis – concept – implementation – reflection).
  • Work in accordance with the ethical and professional standards of the academic environment.

Organizational and leadership competencies:

  • Experience in leading artistic or research projects.
  • Developed communication, cooperation and organisational skills.
  • The candidate must submit a written vision for the development of the field, including the development of teaching methods.

 

Preference will be given to candidates:

  • with internationally recognised professional achievements, awards or important presentations of their work;
  • with experience in international collaboration, visiting teaching or cooperation with international institutions;
  • with experience in interdisciplinary projects connecting art, design and other fields;
  • with experience in organising professional or educational events (projects, exhibitions, festivals, conferences);
  • with active participation in the development of institutional or study strategies.

 

Job description:

  • Designing and updating course syllabi and adapting higher education professional study programmes to professional requirements;
  • Organising or co-organising all activities required for the implementation of a course in accordance with the syllabus and developments in the field, including coordination and supervision of other course staff (assistants, technical and other collaborators);
  • Lecturing, conducting seminars and other teaching activities;
  • Preparing, assessing and grading examinations and other assessments;
  • Supervising students’ final theses at all three study levels;
  • Leading and organising student projects and festivals;
  • Artistic and research work;
  • Participation in other activities related to teaching within the professional field (recognition procedures, etc.);
  • Participation in management and governance, including work in bodies and committees of ALUO and the University of Ljubljana.
