There are 38 academic libraries at the faculties and academies of the University of Ljubljana. The University’s library system also incorporates the Central Technological Library at the University of Ljubljana and the National and University Library. The coordination of libraries’ activities is carried out by the Vice-rector, the Library Council and the University Office of Library Services.

The mission of academic libraries is management of library services, information and knowledge. They provide library services and information resources for studies, teaching and research at higher education institutions. They act as information and referral centres for scientific and professional information, as such they provide information from the areas where the University and its members work. The academic libraries of the University also create personal bibliographies of teachers, researchers and other employees of the University. They provide support for open access in science and for open e-higher education.

While their main users are students, teachers, researchers and other University employees, the libraries are also open for membership to other users. The University of Ljubljana students pay the membership fee at the home faculty or academy while enrolling and can afterwards use the basic services of all University of Ljubljana libraries for free with a student card.

The method of operation, the range of services and the prices are specified by each library in its Rules of Operation. The Senate of the University of Ljubljana adopted the umbrella Rules on 27 October 2015. The basic user services include:
