Conditions for Supervisors

Doctoral supervisors and co-supervisors shall be teachers at the University of Ljubljana with the title of assistant professor, associate professor or full professor, or an academic staff member with the title of research associate, senior research associate or senior research fellow, and shall demonstrate their research activity with a relevant bibliography from the broader field covered by the doctoral dissertation (three to five references).

Supervisors and co-supervisors may also be persons with an appropriate faculty rank at another institute (in Slovenia or abroad) who have references from the broader field covered by the doctoral dissertation, and who work in an academic programme or are employed at an institute with whom the UL or a UL faculty or academy has a cooperation agreement in place.

The minimum condition for supervisors and co-supervisors to demonstrate their research activity shall include earning 150 Z SICRIS points for pure research publications over the past five years and achieving a quantitative score A^1/2 higher than 0 points in terms of the important achievements indicator.

In the event of art research, a supervisor or co-supervisor must be appointed to the title of university teacher in the field of art in accordance with the criteria for appointment to the title (Article 40 of the Criteria for Appointment to the Title of University Teachers, Researchers and Associates at the University of Ljubljana); in this case, a group of supervisors is appointed which must also include the supervisor or co-supervisor from the relevant research area who meets the minimum conditions for demonstrating their research activity.

If, for legitimate reasons, a doctoral supervisor or co-supervisor is absent for a longer period of time lasting at least six months (e.g., due to illness or maternity or paternity leave), the Z SICRIS points and the A^1/2 score for important achievements earned over an extended period of one year, or several years if the absence lasts for more than one year, are taken into account.

In accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Doctoral Studies which became effective on 1 October 2021 (unofficial translation), a person may supervise or co-supervise a maximum of six doctoral students enrolled in any doctoral programme at the UL, if no more than two years have elapsed since their last enrolment in a year or additional year. That number shall not include doctoral students who have already submitted their dissertation for assessment.

Supervisors and co-supervisors shall be appointed by the senate of the relevant UL faculty or academy. When approving the doctoral dissertation proposal, the UL Senate shall verify the fulfilment of conditions for supervision or co-supervision, and shall call on the UL faculty or academy to make a replacement if those conditions are not met.

• In accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Doctoral Studies effective 8 June 2019 - 30. September 2021 (in English Language), a person may supervise a maximum of six doctoral students enrolled in a four-year doctoral programme and a maximum of five doctoral students enrolled in a three-year doctoral programme, provided that they are making regular progress in that programme. That number shall not include doctoral students who have submitted their dissertation for assessment. The aforementioned restriction shall not apply to co-supervisors.
  
  
• In accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Doctoral Studies effective 14 October 2017 - 8 June 2019 (in Slovenian Language), a person may supervise a maximum of six doctoral students enrolled in a doctoral programme, provided that they are making regular progress in that programme. That number shall not include doctoral students who have completed all their doctoral programme obligations except for the doctoral dissertation defence and the publication of a research article, and who enrolled in the first year of the doctoral programme more than four years ago. The aforementioned restriction shall not apply to co-supervisors.
