Revisiting the Sustainability Course Labeling Practice Among EUTOPIA Alliance Universities: Shifting from Quantitative to Qualitative Approaches
Event date:
Event location: Zoom
As part of the EUTOPIA alliance’s mission to foster collaborative knowledge creation and institutional transformation, the University of Gothenburg is pleased to host this digital workshop focused on rethinking sustainability course labeling practices across alliance universities. This workshop is the first in an upcoming series of similar workshops we have planned, aiming to deepen our collective understanding and practices around sustainability in higher education. Digital workshop is hosted by University of Gothenburg, in collaboration with the University of Warwick and Babeş-Bolyai University.
The practice of sustainability course labeling has been a key tool used by universities to assess and communicate how Education for Sustainable Development is integrated into curricula. However, current approaches often rely heavily on quantitative metrics-such as the number of sustainability-related learning outcomes and the number of courses labeled-without fully capturing the depth, quality, or transformative potential of sustainability content within these courses.
This workshop aims to:
- Explore Diverse Practices: Present case studies from EUTOPIA alliance universities, showcasing different approaches to sustainability course labeling and ESD integration.
- Shift Perspectives: Discuss the limitations of purely quantitative assessments and explore the potential of qualitative approaches to better reflect the impact and depth of sustainability education.
- Foster Co-Creation: Create a space for sharing best practices, identifying common challenges, and co-creating knowledge to advance sustainability integration in higher education.
- Recognizing the decentralized nature of universities and the diverse ways sustainability is embedded across disciplines and institutions, this workshop will serve as a platform for meaningful dialogue and collaborative learning.
Who Should Attend? - Academic staff involved in curriculum development and ESD
- Researchers, educators and programme managers interested in transformative learning and sustainability assessment
- Sustainability coordinators and education policymakers
