Ethics in the Digital Age: Lessons from EUTOPIA HEALTH Workshop
On 20–21 November 2025, University of Ljubljana hosted the EUTOPIA HEALTH Workshop on Ethical and Professionalism Aspects of Dealing with Health-Related Datasets. The two-day event brought together researchers, educators, and data stewards to explore the ethical challenges and professional responsibilities associated with health data.

The Slovenian smart box, developed at the UL FE, has returned from Antarctica
How reliable are Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) when a ship sails through the harshest conditions on Earth? This question was answered by researchers from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the University of Ljubljana, the “Jožef Stefan” Institute, and the Faculty of Maritime Studies and Transport of the University of Ljubljana. On board the Italian icebreaker Laura Bassi, they carried out a 200-day research expedition. The collected data are crucial for developing the next generations of autonomous ships.

From Streets to Schools: Rethinking Education in Urban Spaces through combined intensive programme Urban Education
Between November 17 and 21, the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Engineering at the University of Ljubljana (UL NTF) hosted the physical part of the Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) Urban Education. The event brought together students from six universities along with teachers and mentors from the EUTOPIA alliance to explore children’s movement in urban environments.

Centre of Excellence in Green Heritage Science to Be Established in Slovenia
In a collaborative European partnership, the University of Ljubljana is in the process of establishing the Centre of Excellence in Green Heritage Science. The new Centre will bring together an interdisciplinary community of researchers – from archaeologists and chemists to computer scientists and conservator-restorers – who develop knowledge in the understanding and management of cultural heritage. The development of the Centre is being led by Professor Matija Strlič.

Assist. Prof. Dr. Meta Sterniša recipient of the Danubius Young Scientist Award
Assist. Prof. Dr. Meta Sterniša from the Department of Food Science and Technology at the Biotechnical Faculty of the University of Ljubljana is the recipient of the Danubius Young Scientist Award, which is presented to young researchers with outstanding achievements in their field. She received the award for her scientific contributions in food science and microbiology

Last week, the now traditional autumn Study in Slovenia Balkan tour took place. The universities participating in this initiative, along with a representative from CMEPIUS, presented the Slovenian education system and study opportunities for candidates from Bulgaria and North Macedonia.

Slovenian Students Explore “Space Mayonnaise” in Microgravity
The CAVE 0g team from the University of Ljubljana studied the formation of emulsions in microgravity during the 87th parabolic flight campaign of the European Space Agency – a key step toward preparing food and medicine in space.

Upon the conclusion of the ULTRA project, the University of Ljubljana presented the results of its study programme reforms
The final conference of the ULTRA – University of Ljubljana (UL) for a Sustainable Society project, through which the UL overhauled 29 higher education study programmes, was held at the Ljubljana Exhibition and Convention Centre. At the conference entitled New Knowledge for New Generations, the UL presented the results of the three-year project, which was part of the national Recovery and Resilience Plan (NOO).

UL Rector Prof. Dr Gregor Majdič visits Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU)
The meeting took place on 5 November 2025, as part of the celebrations marking the 15th anniversary of the Slovenian language programme being available at this university. Over the past 15 years, more than 200 Chinese students have studied Slovenian at BFSU. During the visit, Rector Majdič met with BFSU President Prof. Jia Wenjian and the Dean of the School of European Languages and Cultures, where the Slovenian language programme is offered. The two university leaders agreed to renew the existing cooperation agreement and to strengthen collaboration between the institutions beyond the field of Slovenian language and culture.

University of Ljubljana at the Student World Online Europe and Turkey Postgrad Fair
The University of Ljubljana participated in the online FPP fair for candidates from Europe and Turkey, held on November 4. During the fair, interested candidates from the region could visit the University of Ljubljana’s virtual stand, which featured brochures, videos, and information about studying at the university. There was also an option for direct communication with the university through chat, which encouraged many candidates to inquire about studies at the university.

University Week 2025
From 8 to 12 December 2025, the University of Ljubljana (UL) will host University Week – a now traditional week of events organised to mark the anniversary of the start of teaching at Slovenia’s oldest established university. This year’s 106th anniversary will be marked by the presentation of awards honouring outstanding research achievements, the conferral of honorary titles and the presentation of plaques and prizes to those who make the University of Ljubljana a better university every year.

Together with other Slovenian public universities, in cooperation with the Study in Slovenia initiative, the University of Ljubljana presented study opportunities at the Study in Europe fair in Tirana, Albania, on October 11, 2025. The event, attended by many high school and university students, aimed to promote European universities and study abroad options.

The 15th UNSA Study Expo scholarship fair was held at the University of Sarajevo on 23 October, bringing together 48 exhibitors – universities, embassies, and international organizations – from 21 countries. One of the participants was also University of Ljubljana.

University of Ljubljana receives funding for the new Faculty of Pharmacy building
The University of Ljubljana has signed a funding agreement for the new UL Faculty of Pharmacy building, which will be integrated into the university’s Brdo campus. This important step signals the realisation of the university’s long-term vision of having state-of-the-art, functional and technologically advanced infrastructure capable of fostering high-quality educational, research and technical activities in the pharmacy field.

University of Ljubljana Senate confirms the appointment of Professor Dr Maja Klun to the post of Vice-Rector
At an ordinary session held on 21 October 2025, the University of Ljubljana Senate confirmed that Professor Maja Klun from the Faculty of Public Administration (UL FU) will serve a four-year term as Vice-Rector ending in 2029. Professor Klun will begin her term of office on 1 November 2025, and have responsibility for the area of digitalisation and knowledge transfer.

The University of Ljubljana presents four major interdisciplinary research projects worth over EUR 10 million
At a press conference today, the University of Ljubljana (UL) unveiled four internationally groundbreaking interdisciplinary research projects, which will receive a total of more than EUR 10 million in funding over the next five years. The projects were selected through an internal call for proposals issued by the UL, aimed at fostering cooperation among its member faculties and strengthening research excellence and international visibility.
