The call for applications for the Dr Uroš Seljak Award 2024 is now open. Each year, cosmologist Dr Uroš Seljak supports the best scientific publications by Slovenian students in a one-off amount of USD 10,000, with the aim of encouraging and supporting scientific publications by students in first- and second-level study programmes in the Republic of Slovenia, as well as to promote mentoring of students. The deadline for applications is April 15 2024.

Dr. Uroš Seljak, Professor in the Department of Physics at the University of California, Berkeley, alumnus of the University of Ljubljana (UL) and mentor at the American-Slovenian Educational Foundation (ASEF), is the recipient of the 2021 Gruber Prize. This is one of the world's most prestigious scientific prizes in cosmology, awarded by the Gruber Foundation of Yale University. He was awarded the 500.000 $ prize, along with two other winners, for their significant contributions to methods that are key to the study and understanding of the origin of the Universe.

His part of the prize was used to establish a charitable fund to support the best scientific publications by Slovenian students each year in the form of the Dr Uroš Seljak Prize in the form of a one-off award of 10.000 $.

The prize is awarded jointly by the Rector of the UL, the donor and the ASEF Institute.

Candidates for the prize may be:

  • who, at the time of the research work leading to the scientific publication, were enrolled in the first or second cycle of studies at one of the higher education institutions in the Republic of Slovenia,
  • who are the author or co-author of a scientific work that has been published or accepted for publication with evidence from the editor, provided that no more than 2 years have elapsed between the end of the student's status in the programme in which the research was carried out and the time of candidature for the prize,
  • who have not yet received the Dr Uroš Seljak Prize.
