For a community based on the values of diversity, equality and equal opportunities for all

For Pride Month, the rainbow flag was once again raised above the entrance to the Rector's Office of the University of Ljubljana (UL). This gesture expresses our support for the LGBTIQ+ community and reaffirms our commitment to human rights, equality and inclusion for all individuals, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression.
At the University of Ljubljana, we are dedicated to fostering an open, safe and inclusive academic environment. One key step in this direction is the implementation of the Gender Equality Plan, which outlines concrete measures to promote equality and diversity across all aspects of the University's activities.
Assist. Martin Vrtačnik, Assistant for Speech at the Academy of Theatre, Radio, Film and Television of the University of Ljubljana (UL AGRFT) and member of the working group responsible for monitoring the implementation of the Gender Equality Plan within the UL’s Equality and Inclusion Office, highlighted the importance of language as a tool for social change:
“Gender-inclusive language use is one of the most important mechanisms for implementing the University's commitment to an open, respectful and equal environment. Language is not only a means of communication; it also reflects social norms and power structures that can create or reinforce stereotypes and prejudices. Respectful and inclusive language use therefore challenges entrenched biases and contributes to a more just and inclusive society in which all gender identities are acknowledged and respected."
The Gender Equality Plan monitoring group is also developing guidelines on gender-sensitive language use to support inclusive communication in everyday written and spoken contexts. "By acknowledging all gender identities and treating them equally, we foster a sense of belonging and respect for all individuals – regardless of their gender, gender identity or gender expression. We want these guidelines to serve as a tool for actively promoting equality and respect for everyone, because it is only through shared language that we can help build a society grounded in the values of diversity, equality and equal opportunities for all. That is why, during Pride Month, we encourage you to use language in ways that create an environment where every person feels recognised, respected and included. This is also how we build a community rooted in equality and mutual respect," added Assist. Martin Vrtačnik.
The guidelines for gender-sensitive (inclusive) language use will be published in the autumn.
