The capital project for the new building of the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Ljubljana (UL FFA), pursues the objective of constructing a building for teaching and research purposes. It is being planned in parallel with the project for the new building of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, University of Ljubljana (UL FS). These are the largest capital projects undertaken by the University of Ljubljana in several decades and are being developed in a coordinated manner.

The building will be highly energy-efficient and designed to meet the highest standards of functionality, sustainable construction, technical, biological and chemical safety, and cost-effectiveness in delivery, operation and maintenance. It is also intended to represent a significant architectural achievement. The project will comply with the DNSH principle, ensuring that it does not cause significant harm to key environmental objectives.

Description of the building

The planned Faculty of Pharmacy building comprises a basement, ground floor with mezzanine, first and second floors and a terrace level. The building is divided into a main section containing teaching and research spaces with the lecture theatres and laboratories of individual departments, and, in the western part of the building, an Infrastructure Centre housing advanced research and development laboratories and a university teaching pharmacy.

The project also includes the arrangement of shared external areas and common utilities infrastructure for UL FS and UL FFA, including a shared entrance to the underground car park.

The planned teaching and research facilities will support the development of higher education and the conduct of research across the broader fields of pharmacy, clinical biochemistry and related natural sciences, thereby representing a core mission of the new UL FFA building.

The ground floor accommodates lecture theatres of various sizes, some of which extend into the mezzanine, administrative offices, a refreshment area with satellite kitchen, a cafeteria and a library with reading room. The mezzanine is primarily intended for central student changing rooms and service areas. The first and second floors are organised as laboratory levels, with a southern teaching section and a northern research section. The terrace level is intended for academic staff offices and administrative offices.

The basement level is intended for parking and service areas, with a basic-level civil protection shelter located in the western section. Access for vehicles, deliveries and parking is provided by an access road running north of the Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Technology (UL FKKT), leading to Severni Trg, where the ramp to the basement level is located.

The Infrastructure Centre forms the westernmost part of the building. In addition to accredited laboratories, the ground floor houses a university teaching pharmacy and an outpatient consultation clinic. The first and second floors are entirely dedicated to advanced laboratories and clean rooms. The terrace level serves as a technical floor.
