The Knaffel Foundation Scholarship is intended to encourage postgraduate studies of graduates of the University of Ljubljana who are enrolled in master's or doctoral studies at higher education institutions in Vienna. It is granted for one academic year in the form of a payment towards the cost of living in the Knafl Residence or the Korotan Residence in Vienna.

Who can apply?

The Knafl Foundation Scholarship is available to graduates of one of the faculties of the University of Ljubljana who have an average grade point average of 8 (eight) or above and who have not yet reached the age of 30 at the time of the deadline for submitting the scholarship application. Exceptionally, the board of directors (curatorium) of the institution may also award a scholarship to a candidate with a lower average grade if there are justified reasons for this (excellent performance in the field of study that is the subject of the postgraduate studies, a grade structure that indicates, for example, the candidate's initial or temporary difficulties).

Luka Knafelj

Luka Knafelj, a Slovenian priest, served in Vienna in the mid-17th century. In 1658 he became parish priest of the rich imperial parish of Gross Russbach in Lower Austria. The parish and its property were the main source of his income, which was sufficient to buy a house in Vienna. Before his death, he bequeathed almost his entire estate to a foundation for the scholarship of students from Carniola. It is very likely that he was inspired to do so by the executor of his will, his friend and later rector of the University of Vienna, Jurij (Georg) Wohinz. Initially managed by the University of Vienna, the Knaffel Foundation (i.e. the house where Luka Knafelj lived) was transferred to the University of Ljubljana in 1961 and is still managed by the University of Ljubljana today.
