The scholarship is intended to encourage doctoral (in exceptional cases master's) graduates from Slovenian and foreign universities who enrol in doctoral (in exceptional cases master's) studies at higher education institutions in Austria and elsewhere in Europe. It is awarded for one academic year at a monthly rate of 500 euros and is payable over nine months (9 times) during the academic year. The scholarship can be extended for a further academic year if funding is available and the reasons are justifiable.
Who can apply?
The Tuma Scholarship is open to graduates of Slovenian universities or universities abroad who have Slovenian citizenship or can prove their Slovenian origin. Applicants must have a master's thesis with a minimum grade of eight and be under 30 years of age at the deadline for applying for the scholarship. The Foundation's Governing Board may also award a scholarship to a candidate with a lower grade if there are justifiable reasons for doing so.

Dr. Jelena Vojvodić Tuma and dr. Matija Tuma
Together with the Knafl Foundation in Vienna, the Tumas founded the Slovenian Scholarship Fund in 2015. Dr Jelena Vojvodić Tuma and Dr Matija Tuma left a part of their assets to the Knafl Foundation in Vienna to be administered by the Knafl Foundation for the education of Slovenian students. At their request, the Knafl Foundation set up a scholarship fund from which the Tuma scholarship is awarded.
In 2016, the Tumas were awarded the "Pro universitate labacensi" award, which is given at the University of Ljubljana to persons who have made a significant contribution to the development of the University's material possibilities or to the training of its staff through their means or work, for facilitating the provision of scholarships to Slovenian students in Vienna and other centres of higher education.
