Vice-rector for digitalisation and knowledge transfer
Professor Maja Klun is a full professor of public sector economics at the Faculty of Public Administration of the University of Ljubljana (UL FU). She completed her undergraduate and postgraduate studies at the School of Economics and Business (formerly known as the Faculty of Economics) at the University of Ljubljana, receiving her doctorate there in 2002. She began her career in state administration at the Ministry of Economic Relations and Development (Foreign Economic Relations Administration) while building an academic career at what is now known as the Faculty of Public Administration. She has been a guest lecturer in cities across Europe, including Prague, Rotterdam, Ghent, Bratislava, Salzburg and Rijeka. Her main area of research concerns public sector economics, particularly public finances. As a researcher, Professor Klun has been involved in a number of projects in her area of expertise, including FP7, Horizon 2020, Interreg Alpine Space, and projects financed by the Croatian research agency and the Slovenian Research and Innovation Agency (ARIS). She is a member of the Digital Transformation for Smart Public Governance research group. From 2005 to 2007, she was a member of the government’s group of experts working on the development of results-oriented budgeting; in 2007, she was appointed to the group working on improving regulations within the Ministry of Public Administration; and from 2009 to 2013, she was a member of the government’s strategic council for the public sector. From 2010 to 2013, she was Deputy Secretary-General at the European Association for Public Administration Accreditation (EAPAA). She has been a member of the NISPAcee Steering Committee since 2022, and in 2025 was elected chair of the committee, with a mandate to serve until 2027. She has been appointed to lead several organising committees of various international conferences, including TED9, NISPAcee and E-government. She has authored and co-authored papers in prominent research journals, and contributed chapters to various Slovenian and foreign monographs. In 2020, she was given the Alena Brunovska Award for Teaching Excellence in Public Administration by NISPAcee. Since 2020, she has been editor-in-chief of CEPAR, a journal published by the UL’s Faculty of Public Administration, and also sits on a number of editorial boards of international journals. She was Vice-Dean for Research at the Faculty of Public Administration for 12 years (2009–2021), and completed her third term of office as head of the Chair of Economics and Public Sector Management in 2025. Professor Klun has also served as President of the Academic Assembly, chaired the Faculty of Public Administration Publishing Department, headed coordination of the joint doctoral study programme at the UL Faculty of Public Administration, and been a member of the UL Committee for Research and Habilitation Committee.
She has been elected to the position of UL Vice-Rector for Digitalisation and Knowledge Transfer for a term commencing 1 November 2025 and ending 30 September 2029.
