Based on funds obtained under the European Commission’s Horizon 2020 work programme in the Call for Applications of the European Research Area, ERA Chair, the University of Ljubljana has established a Chair of Metabolomics in food and nutrition (FOODOMICS) research centre. The centre links together metabolomics disciplines – food science, nutrition, chemistry, microbiology, health, agronomy, environment with the aim of creating new advances in food production, processing food quality assessment, health and environmental protection. There is an opening for the position of head of the FOODOMICS centre (ERA Chair Holder). The candidate must be an exceptional scientist with experience in the field of heading up research and managing people, as well as in securing research funding.
The FOODOMICS Chair Holder (M/F) will be employed for the duration of the project (until 31 January 2030) in the position of research fellow. The Chair Holder will lead the research group and conduct research in fields of his/her own choosing. For the duration of the project the Chair Holder may use project funds to secure the collaboration of researchers with doctoral degrees and doctoral students in agreement with the project’s strategic committee and project coordinator. Cooperation with members of other groups at UL and other academic and industrial partners is expected.
The FOODOMICS Chair Holder should as a matter of urgency initiate applications for securing new projects and thereby secure the centre’s research funding. The Chair Holder will have joint responsibility for disseminating research results and public presentation of projects.
The Chair Holder will also be responsible for ensuring the sustainability of the FOODOMICS centre upon the conclusion of funding for the project ERA Chair FOODOMICS.

Brief description of work and tasks:
- planning, organising and managing the FOODOMICS centre
- establishing an interdisciplinary research team covering metabolomics research
- managing the FOODOMICS project team
- conducting research work in line with the project goals
- appointing heads of individual work units
- meeting regularly with the strategic committee and the project coordinator
- communicating with the advisory committee every six months
- analysing current conditions and implementing necessary structural changes
- implementing an improved long-term human resources strategy aimed at promoting gender equality and the professional and career development of researchers
- increasing the research excellence of the University of Ljubljana and linking the University of Ljubljana and its researchers to industry
- securing funds for research, preparing project proposals
- promoting the University of Ljubljana with the aim of increasing its visibility
- technology transfer to industry
- preparing and implementing international and industrial projects and other forms of cooperation
- publishing research
- guiding the research focus of FOODOMICS project group members and expanding project activities
- activities in education and the creation of new subjects on postgraduate study fields at the University of Ljubljana
- heading up the organisation of international summer schools and workshops.
Conditions for the position:
- doctorate of science in life sciences, natural science or technical field
- valid habilitation title of research fellow for the field of life sciences, natural or technical sciences. Candidates who hold a valid habilitation title at the University of Ljubljana or the title of guest researcher at the University of Ljubljana will meet the conditions. The position is also open to candidates who at the time of applying do not hold a valid title, but meet the conditions for election to the relevant title as laid down by the University of Ljubljana Criteria. In this case, together with their application they must submit a reference list of published material and a CV. The Selection Committee may then propose the initiation of the procedure for acquiring the title.

- 4 years of work experience in at least one of the technical project fields: microfabrication technologies, (bio)chemical processes and microfluidics-based cell analysis, the use of microfluidics in medicine (priority will be given to candidates with extensive experience in these fields)
- proven experience in applications and management of international research and industrial projects
- proven capacity for the work and tasks in the job description
- probationary period: 3 months.
