Synchronising Micro-Credentials in the EU Ecosystem: Opportunities and challenges for learners, employers, and higher education institutions

On May 27, 2025, an international seminar "Synchronizing Micro-Credentials in the EU Ecosystem: Opportunities and Challenges for Learners, Employers, and Higher Education Institutions" took place at the Permanent Representation of Slovenia to the EU in Brussels, organised by the University of Ljubljana and the Slovenian Business and Research Association (SBRA) in Brussels.
The seminar brought together various stakeholders from higher education and business to discuss the role of micro-credentials in today's educational ecosystems and broader society.
The seminar fostered constructive dialogue between all relevant stakeholders, highlighting that the successful future of micro-credentials requires a coordinated European approach to quality, which must also be based on institutional practices and partnerships with the external environment.
The seminar featured presentations by:
Simon Roy, Head of Higher Education Policy Directorate for Education and Skills OECD
Maria Kelo, Director of Institutional Development at the European University Association (EUA)
Aleksandar Šušnjar, Director of the European Quality Assurance Register for Higher Education
Bieke Morlion, Team Leader for Alumni and Lifelong Learning at Ghent University
Asst. Prof. Dr. Jana Arbeiter and Prof. Dr. Andrej Kos, Chair and Vice chair of the Programme Committee for Micro-Credentials at the University of Ljubljana
Marjana Majerič, MSc, Executive Director for Strategic development & Internationalization at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Slovenia
Dr. Darja Ferčej Temeljotov, Strategic Programs Advisor at Lek Pharmaceuticals, spoke at the seminar about cooperation with the Faculty of Biotechnology. They also prepared a video presentation, in which they presented the small volume learning and training course and experiences. Their presentation is available here.
