Veterinary medicine

The single cycle master study programme Veterinary medicine primarily addresses those who would like to work with companion animals, control production of animal diseases - typically in veterinary services (e.g. swine, cattle, poultry, fish, fur animals), work in the food processing industry, pharmaceutical industry or veterinary institutions involved in research and disease control.

The candidate’s state of health must allow carrying out practical field work. The candidates are expected to express liking for gaining field experience, independent and psychologically compliant communication skills.

Selected applicants must provide a medical certificate from a specialist in occupational medicine stating that they are medically fit to perform the work and duties of a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine.

Vaccination against tick-borne meningoencephalitis and rabies in Year 1 is a further mandatory condition for enrolment (Rules on vaccination and protection using medicine and protection against the introduction and spread of infectious diseases).

Systematic teaching (lectures, practical work, seminars) takes 30-hour per week (classes), 30 weeks per year. In the final year, students primarily choose elective subjects and perform clinical practice (intramural rotation) and clinical training (extramural rotation).

The last study requirement in the study program is the final exam to obtain the title of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. Before taking the final exam, students must complete all mandatory and elective courses.

The European Association of Establishments for Veterinary Education (EAEVE) granted the University of Ljubljana Veterinary faculty status: approved.
