If you are staying in Slovenia for more than three months, you must apply for a temporary residence permit. However, the methods and conditions for entering the Republic of Slovenia differ depending on whether the person entering is a citizen of a Member State of the European Union or a third-country national.

Temporary residence permit - Special desk at the Administrative Unit Ljubljana
Together with Administrative Unit Ljubljana, we decided on a special desk for our international students from September 22 to October 9. Our International Student Ambassadors will greet you each working day during that time, offer guidance for submitting paperwork to apply for a residence permit. The Administrative Unit will anticipate that you have all the necessary paperwork on hand, have completed the application form, and intend to submit the required paperwork for your residence permit that same day.
Applying for a temporary residence permit
If you are applying for the first time or would like to extend your temporary residence permit, please proceed as follows:

First find out about the procedures, the required documents and the application forms, depending on your citizenship:

Start by compiling the necessary documentation and finding out about the procedures you need to follow and the deadlines you need to meet.
Step 3:
Book an appointment via the eSamonaročanje application or by calling +386 1 828 16 90. You can also send the application and other required documents by post to UE Ljubljana, Tobačna ulica 5, 1000 Ljubljana, but if you are applying for the first time, you will be called in to provide your fingerprints (non-EU). Please read the detailed instructions on how to make an appointment.
The Act on Measures for the Optimization of Certain Procedures at Administrative Units (ZUOPUE) has been adopted, enabling the submission of documents and applications to any administrative unit in Slovenia, regardless of place of residence. This means that you can submit documents and applications to any administrative unit in Slovenia if you make an appointment. Every year in September and October (and February for spring semester exchange students), we also organise a special desk and review documents without you having to book an appointment.
Step 4:
Go to the appointment at the administrative unit and take all the necessary documents and signed application forms with you.
Step 5:
Once your application has been processed, the administrative office will inform you by e-mail or post:
- If you have submitted all the documents, the administrative office will send you an invitation to collect the issued permit. You will need to book another appointment via the eSamonaročanje application by selecting the Vročitev tujci/Service on foreigners option. You can also go without an appointment (with an invitation to pick up your permit), but in this case you will probably have to wait about an hour, depending on how busy it is.
- If your application is incomplete, the administrative office will ask you to submit additional documents.

Extending or renewing a permit
Please take care when renewing your residence permit to avoid situations that could complicate your stay in Slovenia and your studies. If you are a student who already has a temporary residence permit valid until 30 September 2026, and you do not manage to extend it by the end of September, please note the following information.
• Any extension/renewal of the residence permit must be completed by the date on which the residence permit expires. For most students, the residence permit is valid until the end of student status, i.e. 30 September. This means that you must submit the documents by 30 September at the latest if you wish to extend the permit.
• If you have not managed to submit the application by 30 September, you cannot apply for an extension of the permit, but must apply for a new permit and go through the procedure as for an initial application. You will need a stamp showing the date of your entry, which must not be more than three months old.
