The methods and conditions of entry into the Republic of Slovenia differ depending on whether the person entering the country is a citizen of a member state of the European Union, or a third-country national. If you are staying in Slovenia for more than three months you will need to obtain a temporary residence permit.

Applying for a temporary residence permit

If you apply for the first time as well as renewing your temporary residence permit, please follow the steps below.

  1. First, check the procedures, required documents and application forms according to your citizenship:
  2. Start collecting the required documentation and be well informed about the procedures that you must go through and deadlines you need to meet.
  3. Book an appointment through the application eSamonaročanje or via phone number +386 1 828 16 90. You can also send the application and other necessary documentation by post to the address UE Ljubljana, Tobačna ulica 5, 1000 Ljubljana, but if you apply for the first time, they will call you to give them your fingerprints, so you will have to make an appointment then. Please read the detailed instructions on how to book an appointment. The Act on Measures to Optimize Certain Procedures (ZUOPUE) at Administrative Units has been adopted, which enables the submission of documents and applications to any administrative unit in Slovenia, regardless of place of residence. This means that you can submit documents and applications to any administrative unit in Slovenia with an appointment.
  4. Go to the booked appointment at the administrative unit having all the required documents and signed application forms with you.
  5. After processing your application the administrative unit will inform you via e-mail or post:
    • If you submitted all the documentation the adminstrative unit will send you an invitation to collect the issued permit. You must book an appointment again throught the application eSamonaročanje by selecting option Vročitev tujci/Service on foreign nationals.
    • If your application is incomplete the adminsitrative unit will invite you to send additional documentation.

Notes:

1 If you have a double citizenship of EU and non-EU country, we recommend choosing the procedure for EU & EEA citizens.

For non-EU citizens who cannot enter Slovenia without visa the procedure is different. Find out more ...

Extending or renewing a permit

International students

Please, be careful when it comes to extending the permit, so that such situations do not occur, which can only make your stay in Slovenia and your studies more difficult. If you are a student who already has a temporary residence permit that was valid until September 30 2024 and you did not manage to extend it until the end of September, please pay attention to the following information.

  • Any extension/renewal of the permit must be done by the date when the permit expires - for most students, the permit is valid until the end of the student status, i.e. until September 30. This means that in order to extend the permit, you must send/hand over the documentation by September 30 at the latest.
  • If you did not succeed to apply until September 30, you cannot apply for an extension of the permit, but you will have to apply for a new permit and follow the procedure as if you were applying for the first time. You need to have a stamp, where it says the date of your entry, and it can't be older than three months.
