If you are staying in Slovenia for longer than three months, you must apply for a temporary residence permit. However, the methods and conditions for entering the Republic of Slovenia differ depending on whether the person entering is a citizen of a Member State of the European Union or a third-country national.

More information

Applying for a temporary residence permit

If you are applying for the first time or would like to extend your temporary residence permit, please proceed as follows:

Step 1:

First find out about the procedures, the documents required and the application forms depending on your citizenship:

Step 2:

Start by compiling the necessary documentation and find out about the procedures you need to go through and the deadlines you need to meet.

Step 3:

Book an appointment via the eSamonaročanje application or by calling +386 1 828 16 90. You can also send the application and other required documents by post to UE Ljubljana, Tobačna ulica 5, 1000 Ljubljana, but if you are applying for the first time, they will call you to hand in your fingerprints (non-EU). Please read the detailed instructions on how to make an appointment.

The Act on Measures for the Optimization of Certain Procedures at Administrative Units (ZUOPUE) has been adopted, which enables the submission of documents and applications to any administrative unit in Slovenia, regardless of place of residence. This means that you can submit documents and applications to any administrative unit in Slovenia if you make an appointment. Every year in September and October, we also organize special desk and the review of documents without you having to book an appointment.

Step 4:

Go to the appointment at the administrative unit and bring all the necessary documents and signed application forms with you.

Step 5:

Once your application has been processed, you will be informed by the administrative office by e-mail or post:

  • If you have submitted all the documents, the administrative office will send you an invitation to collect the issued permit. You will need to book an appointment again via the eSamonaročanje application by selecting the Vročitev tujci/foreigner service option. You can also go without appointment (with an invitation to pick up your permit), but in this case you will probably have to wait about an hour, depending on the crowds.
  • If your application is incomplete, the administrative office will ask you to submit additional documents.

1 If you have a double citizenship of EU and non-EU country, we recommend choosing the procedure for EU & EEA citizens.

For non-EU citizens who cannot enter Slovenia without visa the procedure is different. Find out more ...

Extending or renewing a permit

Please be careful when it comes to renewing your residence permit to avoid situations that can only complicate your stay in Slovenia and your studies. If you are a student who already has a temporary residence permit that is valid until September 30, 2025, and you do not manage to extend it by the end of September, please note the following information.

• Any extension/renewal of the residence permit must be done by the date on which the residence permit expires - for most students, the residence permit is valid until the end of the student status, i.e. September 30. This means that you must submit the documents by September 30 at the latest if you wish to extend the permit.

• If you have not managed to submit the application by September 30, you cannot apply for an extension of the permit, but must apply for a new permit and go through the procedure as for an initial application. You will need a stamp showing the date of your entry, which must not be older than three months.
