As an EU or EEA citizen, if you are staying in Slovenia for more than three months, you must obtain a residence registration certificate within your first three months in the country. The process usually takes a few months.

How to start?

You can start the process at the administrative unit where you (will) live. In Ljubljana, you can book an appointment via phone number 01 828 16 90 or through the application eSamonaročanje.

Which documents do you need to submit?

  • Signed application form (.doc.pdfexample).
  • Biometric color photograph.
  • Signature form (.pdf).
  • Valid passport or ID and copy of the document. Passport must be valid for at least three months after the intended stay in Slovenia.
  • Confirmation of address (e.g. rent contract, owner’s statement or proof of ownership) - you need this when you get your permit to report an address.
  • Proof of purpose of stay: proof of admission to studies, vocational training or other form of education issued by an educational institution, a state body responsible for the implementation of an international or bilateral agreement, or a state-authorized organization responsible for implementing a particular program.
  • Proof of sufficient means of subsistence: a statement or employment contract (statement: .doc.pdf, example).
  • Proof of health insurance (copy of European Health Insurance Card - blue card).

Visiting the administrative unit

About visiting the Administrative unit:

  • They might speak only Slovene, so visit with a tutor, buddy or someone who speaks Slovene.
  • Leave your telephone number, the telephone number of the person who speaks Slovene (tutor, buddy), and an email address.
  • Check your email (including the spam folder).
  • The residence registration certificate is valid for five years, or for a shorter period if you indicate this at the time of submitting the application. If you want to extend the permit, you should do so in the last month of the permit’s validity.
  • Please make sure you have written your name and surname on your postal mail here in Slovenia, so that you can easily receive all important mail from the administrative unit, such as requests to supplement documentation, invitations to issue a permit, and other notices. If you would like to receive confirmation of the submitted temporary residence permit form by email as well, please indicate this on the form you are filling out.

Issuing of permit

Fees

Payment via bank transfer or in person at the Administrative unit:

  • Fee for the issue of a certificate of registration: EUR 9.10 - at submission.
  • Application fee: EUR 0.50 - at submission.
  • Printing for the card: EUR 12.32 - when collecting the card.

Prolonging the residence permit

If you are extending your residence registration certificate, you must submit the application and documentation to the administrative unit no later than the date on which the permit expires (usually 30 September). You may apply for an extension up to 60 days before the permit expires. You can also send the application for renewal and the other required documentation by post to UE Ljubljana, Tobačna ulica 5, 1000 Ljubljana.

Registration of temporary residence

  • You can register your temporary residence after obtaining a residence permit.
  • If you live in the Student Dormitory, Postgraduate Dormitory, etc., the registration of temporary residence is made by the landlord.
  • If you live in the private accomodation, you must arrange the registration of temporary residence within 8 days of receiving the temporary residence permit.
  • You will get an informal application form upon receipt of the temporary residence permit, which you must submit along with copy of temporary residence permit by post to the address UE Ljubljana, Tobačna ulica 5, 1000 Ljubljana or email ue.ljubljana@gov.si.
