University of Ljubljana is the oldest and largest higher education and scientific research institution in Slovenia. University with its rich tradition was founded in 1919. It has approximately 40,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students and employs approximately 6,000 higher education teachers, researchers, assistants and administrative staff in 23 faculties and three arts academies. 

The central building, all three academies and faculties are located in the centre. Some of the most recent and modern buildings were constructed on the outskirts of Ljubljana, giving the university and its students a ubiquitous presence in the city. 

Development areas of the University of Ljubljana Strategy 2022–2027

The University of Ljubljana Strategy 2022–2027 includes five development areas and three supporting areas. 

The development areas of the strategy are:

  • developing education for creativity, innovation, criticality and social responsibility, embedded in the domestic and international environment,
  • promote excellence in science and the arts, internationalisation, interdisciplinarity, openness and social relevance,
  • to build on support for the transfer of knowledge and the arts to all spheres of social life,
  • promote an accessible, inclusive and equitable academic environment; and
  • strengthen the social role and place of UL in national and global societal dialogue.

The supporting areas in the strategy are:

  • strengthen autonomy and finances,
  • upgrade processes and infrastructure,
  • support staff development.

Research

In accordance with Article 28 of the Scientific Research and Innovation Activity Act (ZZrID) and based on the University of Ljubljana Strategy 2022–2027, the University of Ljubljana has prepared the Plan for Implementing Scientific Research Activities of Stable Funding for the period 2022–2027, which includes:

  • strategic and long-term goals;
  • development goals;
  • measures for achieving these goals, baseline initial and target values, and indicators used to monitor the attainment of target values;
  • Plan for implementing scientific research activities, including the development of activities within the ISF, PSF, and RSF pillars of stable research funding.

Summary of the self-evaluation report

The University of Ljubljana significantly strengthened its research excellence, innovation capacity, and societal impact during the 2022–2025 period, according to its self-evaluation report. Among the most notable achievements are the acquisition of 15 European Research Council (ERC) projects, 93 researchers ranked among the world's top 2% most-cited scientists, and the University's highest-ever position in the QS Europe rankings.

Sustainability Strategy

Adopted in March 2025, the University of Ljubljana Sustainability Strategy represents the first holistic UL strategy in the area of sustainability and supports the objectives of the umbrella UL Strategy 2022–2027.

The key areas of sustainability and related measures in accordance with the Strategy cover the structure and processes for achieving the University of Ljubljana's sustainability goals, sustainability-oriented education, research, development, and artistic creation, sustainable spatial development, work and living, and cooperation with the environment and knowledge transfer in accordance with the sustainability principles.
