University of Ljubljana receives the ED.VITA Grand Prize for its ULTRA project
The University of Ljubljana (UL) has received the ED.VITA Grand Prize for the “UL for a Sustainable Society – ULTRA” project. Prizes for individual categories have also been won by the Academy of Fine Arts and Design, the Biotechnical Faculty, the Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Technology, the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Engineering, the Faculty of Education and the Veterinary Faculty. The ED.VITA prize is the first and only national award designed to recognise sustainable initiatives and practices in higher education.

Geodiversity became the Sign of the Year 2025
Geodiversity, the Sign of the Year 2025, which was created on the initiative of the Slovenian Geological Society and the Department of Geology at the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Engineering of the University of Ljubljana (UL NTF), is not merely a technical term. It is the story of Earth, which, through rock records, landform shapes, the abundance of water and the fertility of the soil, bears witness to the unimaginably long development of the planet, the foundation of our civilisation and evolution.

Prešeren Prizes presented to students at the University of Ljubljana
As part of University Week, the University of Ljubljana (UL) presented the Prešeren Prizes to its students. The Prešeren Prizes are awarded for outstanding student achievements in the fields of science and the arts. The guest speaker at the ceremony was Prof. Dr Igor Švab from the UL Faculty of Medicine.

From Streets to Schools: Rethinking Education in Urban Spaces through combined intensive programme Urban Education
Between November 17 and 21, the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Engineering at the University of Ljubljana (UL NTF) hosted the physical part of the Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) Urban Education. The event brought together students from six universities along with teachers and mentors from the EUTOPIA alliance to explore children’s movement in urban environments.

Dr Ana Mayer Kansky Awards bestowed for the third time at the UL
On Wednesday, 18 June 2025, the Dr Ana Mayer Kansky Awards for outstanding doctoral theses were awarded for the third time in the Assembly Hall at the Rector’s Office of the University of Ljubljana (UL). The awards were presented to Dr Matej Perovnik, Dr Faris Kočan, Dr Aleša Bricelj, Dr Duje Kodžoman, and Dr Katja Klinar. The award ceremony was held under the patronage of the President of the Republic of Slovenia, Nataša Pirc Musar.

This significant milestone was celebrated with the UL NTF Gala Academy – 30 Years of Cooperation and 105 Years of Tradition. Was Australia Wetter Than Slovenia?
The world-renowned tall limestone pinnacles in the Pinnacle Desert, located in Australia’s Nambung National Park, are approximately 100,000 years old. At that time, Australia was even wetter than Slovenia. This surprising finding was discovered by scientists using an innovative method, including Prof. Dr. Andrej Šmuc and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Aleš Šoster from the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Engineering at the University of Ljubljana, and Dr. Matej Lipar and Dr. Mateja Ferk from the Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts (ZRC SAZU).
