When Feelings Mislead: Technology for a Better Golf Swing
When playing sports, our own perception can easily mislead us. We may be convinced that we have performed a movement perfectly, when in reality we have positioned our arms at a slightly different angle than intended. Researchers at the Laboratory of Information Technologies (LAIT) at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, University of Ljubljana, have addressed this challenge by developing a system that provides golfers with biomechanical feedback on their swing during practice.

Science and Society: the University of Ljubljana is involved in creating a new international master’s programme
As part of its involvement in the Erasmus project Science X Society: Training the next generation of science-society communicators, the University of Ljubljana is working hard on preparations for a new interdisciplinary master’s programme named Science and Society. With the University of Nova Gorica as the co-coordinator, the programme is being put together in partnership with institutions from Austria (University of Klagenfurt), Italy (Ca' Foscari University of Venice and SISSA in Trieste), and Croatia (University of Rijeka).

SMUL conference on the independence of universities, social responsibility and trust in science
How can universities retain their independence in research and teaching, while playing a responsible part in addressing societal issues? What effects do political, economic and technological pressures have on academic work, and how can public trust in science be strengthened? These were the questions at the heart of the SMUL 2026 Conference, which was held on Thursday, 8 October in the Assembly Hall of the University of Ljubljana, and brought together researchers from the domestic and international academic spheres, university leaders, and other stakeholders.

Are locally grown fruit and vegetables really richer in vitamins? Freshness, origin, production method, as well as the duration and conditions of storage all play a role, according to a study conducted by the Biotechnical Faculty of the University of Ljubljana and the Agricultural Institute of Slovenia.

Fifth Dr Uroš Seljak prizes and commendations for the best scientific publications by students
Friday, 9 October in the assembly hall of the Rectorate at the University of Ljubljana saw the Dr Uroš Seljak prizes and commendations being awarded for the best scientific papers produced by first- and second-cycle students in Slovenia. This year’s prizes went to Valter Hudovernik from the Faculty of Computer and Information Science, Sara Klopčič from the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, and Jona Novljan from the Biotechnical Faculty.

UL Shop opens: university publications and merchandise now at a single site
The lobby of the Rectorate at the University of Ljubljana is now home to the UL Shop, which offers visitors a huge range of publications by the University of Ljubljana Press, and the very latest collection of UL merchandise. The new collection was created as part of a redesign of the UL’s image and branding, and the merchandise is also available from the University of Ljubljana Press online store.

Tone Tomšič Academic Choir celebrates its centenary with a gala concert
The Tone Tomšič Academic Choir, which brings together students from all faculties at the University of Ljubljana, is celebrating its centenary this year. Following the choir’s busy programme during the 2025/26 academic year, the climax of the celebrations was a sell-out gala concert in the Gallus Hall at Cankarjev dom on 3 October.

Starting in September and running through October, the University of Ljubljana, in collaboration with the UL Botanical Garden, has been involved in greening four Ljubljana city bus shelter roofs in support of Ljubljana city council’s greening project.

Engineering a Solution for Karst Grassland Restoration
Researchers at the LECAD Laboratory for Engineering Design at the University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, have developed the Semenko P200PSJ brush harvester, which will be used by Škocjan Caves Park to collect native seed mixtures and support the restoration of Karst grasslands. The machine has been designed specifically for the demanding conditions of the Karst, where overgrowth increasingly threatens species-rich grassland habitats.

Universities in the region move to strengthen cross-border cooperation
On 24 September, UL Rector Professor Gregor Majdič took part in a strategic academic meeting at the University of Klagenfurt aimed at strengthening cross-border cooperation. He met Klagenfurt’s Rector Professor Ada Pellert, as well as other rectors and representatives from universities from across the region.

The Guild university network calls for stronger investment in sustainability research as a priority for the EU
On 24 September, the Guild, an international network of research-led universities, published a joint statement on the importance of further investments in sustainability and climate research amid an ever greater focus by the EU on competitiveness, resilience and security. The University of Ljubljana (UL), a member of The Guild, actively contributed to the preparation of this key publication.

New academic year at the University of Ljubljana to be marked by growth, development and responsibility
At a press conference held on 28 September, the University of Ljubljana unveiled the new developments and policy orientations that would be accompanying its entry into the new academic year. Amid high levels of interest in study at UL, these include new interdisciplinary programmes and subjects, stronger support for gifted students, further investment in infrastructure, and new guidelines for the responsible use of artificial intelligence.

How Resilient Are Slovenian Households to Summer Overheating?
A nationwide study shows that overheating already affects almost two-thirds of Slovenian households. Older multi-apartment buildings with inefficient ventilation are the most vulnerable, while the main barriers to adapting buildings are costs and technical limitations.

Students can now prove their student status digitally
From 25 September, University of Ljubljana (UL) students can access digital proof of their student status via the UL ID portal. This process enables student status to be viewed and checked quickly using a dynamic QR code. It also features a barcode for identification and use of services at UL libraries.

Slovenian Researchers Contributed to Revealing Traces of Deep Cave Systems on Australia’s Nullarbor Karst Plain
Kilometres-long shallow, elongated depressions on Australia’s Nullarbor Plain resemble broad riverbeds. In reality, however, they were not formed by surface river flow, but by the collapse of caves deep below the surface. These findings were made by Slovenian and Australian researchers, including Prof. Dr. Andrej Šmuc, Prof. Dr. Matej Dolenec, Assist. Prof. Dr. Tomislav Popit and Primož Miklavc from the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Engineering UL, and Prof. Dr. Uroš Stepišnik from the Faculty of Arts UL.

Professor Gregor Majdič, Rector of the University of Ljubljana, at a discussion on the upcoming EU budget: No groundbreaking innovations without strong basic research
On 9 September 2026, the European University Association (EUA) and six leading European academic groupings held a discussion in Brussels on the importance of research and innovation in the EU’s Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) 2028–2034. The event was attended by representatives of European institutions, universities and research organisations, with the University of Ljubljana’s Rector, Professor Gregor Majdič, among the speakers on a panel discussion that also included the Dutch Minister of Education, Science and Culture Rianne Letschert, the Rector of Trinity College Dublin Linda Doyle and MEP Eszter Lakos. They pointed out that the EU could not reduce investments in research and innovation if it wished to maintain its competitiveness and respond successfully to the social and economic challenges of the future.

In recent years, artificial intelligence has moved from research laboratories and technology companies into nearly every aspect of our work and lives. Initially, the focus was primarily on its capabilities: how quickly it can generate text, prepare a summary, write program code, or assist with data analysis. Today, we are entering a new phase in which technological enthusiasm is increasingly accompanied by questions about responsible use and the impact on education, research, work, and society.
