When thinking about the next steps in your career, one of the most important questions is: What do I know? What am I interested in? And how can I present this to an employer? Studying is not just a time to acquire knowledge - it is also a place where we learn about ourselves. Self-assessment is one of the most useful skills: It helps us to recognise our own strengths, identify development opportunities and present ourselves more confidently.

What is self-assessment - and why is it not so self-evident?

Self-assessment is not just an answer to the question “What am I good at?”, but a process. It is a process in which we learn to recognise, evaluate and formulate our skills, interests and goals. It is a skill that requires time, honesty and also some guidance.

Many students find it difficult to find the right words to present themselves convincingly - be it on a CV, in a job interview or at a chance meeting with a potential employer. This is where a thoughtful approach to self-assessment comes into play.

We can support you by taking part in a workshop, having a one-to-one conversation with a career counsellor and/or carrying out a simulation of the selection process.

Workshop: 'Me on the labour market: self-assessment as preparation for the presentation to the employer

In this workshop we will use a range of tools (questionnaires, exercises and guided reflection) to explore what you know, what you are interested inand how you can translate this into a CV or presentation to an employer.

The workshop organised in Slovenian consists of two parts. The first part focuses on personal reflection, the second part is about putting what you have learnt into practise - you will draft a CV, work out key messages for a presentation and create a short plan for the next steps in your professional development. Between the two parts, you will have a week to reflect and complete a short homework assignment - not difficult, but useful. It is recommended that you attend both sessions as this is the only way to ensure full learning and transfer into practise.

A personal appointment with a career counsellor

If you prefer to start without a group and at your own pace, UL counsellors are available for one-to-one meetings. We can talk about your interests, qualities, strengths, skills and competences - and what this means for your future career path. The meeting on self-assessment is face-to-face, not remote.

Make an appointment.

Test yourself with the simulation of the selection process

The selection process simulation is not only for self-awareness, but also to get valuable feedback on how others - employers, psychologists, counsellors - see you. The event is organised every spring in cooperation with the Department of Psychology of the Faculty of Arts at UL. It is organised in Slovenian.

First you will complete psychological questionnaires often used by employers, then you will take part in a simulated job interview. On completion you will receive:
• an evaluation of the results of the psychological tests,
• written and oral feedback on your performance.

This is a rare opportunity to try out the situations that await you in a real selection process in a safe environment - and to learn from them before the real thing starts. Don't miss the new call for applications.
