You can also use your time as a student to gain work experience. Gaining work experience is not only linked to student work. You can gain work experience as an (active) member of an organisation, as a volunteer, as part of an internship, study exchange, etc.
Try to work as close as possible to your field of work, within your field of study and interests. At the same time, use the work experience as an opportunity to test your work habits, discover and learn about different features of the work environment and deepen your contacts with employers to advance your career. This experience is also valuable for your future job search, as it will give you a much better idea of what you want (or do not want) and help you find and hire suitable future employers. One option is to follow your own entrepreneurial path.

How do you present yourself to an employer?
We need to be able to present all the different experiences in an appropriate way. We advise you to develop your written presentation for the employer as soon as possible, preferably during your studies.
The content, style and format of the presentation can have a significant impact on the employer's first impression and should therefore be prepared with particular attention and time. A positive impression can be created by a correct presentation that appeals to the addressee and follows business communication. Regardless of which form of written presentation you choose, we recommend that you follow these guidelines when preparing your written presentations:
- Use an appropriate level of language.
- Provide only truthful information.
- Be clear and precise.
- Remember that employers spend an average of twenty seconds on each application.
- Observe grammar and spelling rules. Errors in a document divert the reader's attention from the content to the errors. Therefore, run a spelling and grammar check in your word processing programme.
Career counsellors can provide you with advice and assistance and give you feedback on the written presentations you have prepared. You can also take part in one of the workshops organised and conducted by the Career Centre of the University of Ljubljana on this topic. Find out more on the POPR portal.

How do you prepare for a job interview?
The next step is usually to invite the invitation to an interview by the employer. An interview can be defined as a conversation with two or more people in which the job seeker/job applicant presents their knowledge, skills, personal qualities, competencies, abilities and attitudes required for a particular job and in which, on the other hand, the interviewer/potential employer assesses the applicant's suitability for a job with them. It is considered one of the most useful tools for assessing applicants.
In most cases, the interview takes place in person, but it can also be conducted by telephone or online, in one or more rounds, individually or in groups. Individual interviews are the most common. An applicant can be interviewed by several people. They usually take place in several rounds in which the applicants are examined in detail.
In some professions, there is a special type of "job interview". In the case of artists, this is an interview in which the focus is on the applicant's artistic expression. In artistic professions, it is common for applicants to bring their portfolio to the interview.
