Interdisciplinary doctoral programme in BIOMEDICINE
The interdisciplinary doctoral programme in Biomedicine combines various scientific areas that together contribute to the key understanding and continuous development of medical science in a broader sense. The field of biomedicine is quite broad and is traditionally being developed by several member faculties. Advanced laboratory research was also traditionally developed by various laboratories at national research institutes outside the University of Ljubljana. In order to increase the research possibilities for doctoral candidates, three national research institutes were invited to join the university in forming the new doctoral programme in biomedicine.
Due to the great diversity of biomedical research, an interdisciplinary approach to designing the new doctoral programme seemed the most appropriate. In doing so, collaboration of teachers and researchers from separate scientific fields and various departments was achieved. As a result, doctoral candidates obtained wider possibilities to be included in high quality research groups according to their individual interests. The programme is organized by the University of Ljubljana through its faculties: the Biotechnical Faculty, the Faculty of Pharmacy, the Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Technology, the Faculty of Medicine, the Veterinary Faculty, and three research institutes: The Jožef Stefan Institute, The Chemical Institute and The National Institute of Biology. The interdisciplinary Doctoral Programme in Biomedicine is coordinated at the university level by the Programme Council consisting of representatives from each faculty and research institute.
The interdisciplinary doctoral programme in Biomedicine leads to the degree of Doctor of Science in the following scientific fields: Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Pharmacy, Genetics, Public health, Clinical Biochemistry and Laboratory Biomedicine, Clinical Medicine, Basic Medicine, Microbiology, Neuroscience, Toxicology, Veterinary Medicine. The organization of the programme is coordinated by field coordinators acting in the faculties where the doctoral students are enrolled in the programme. The primary emphasis of doctoral study is on the students’ research, so students are obliged to choose their mentors at the beginning of their studies. In addition, to be involved in the research work, students are also offered advanced theoretical knowledge through the choice of several types of courses: compulsory core courses, elective theoretical courses, and elective individual research courses. Together with their mentors and field coordinators, the doctoral candidates design the individual degree programmes by selecting courses that are consistent with the individual student’s research interest.

Scientific achievements in the field of biosciences in the past two decades have provided essential discoveries that have led to essential changes and corrections to previous theories. The rapid development in numerous areas of biological research and the evolution of scientific technologies have opened completely new possibilities for research into biological systems. The rapid development in research into numerous biological systems is reflected in the demand for new basic knowledge, which is provided by high quality, up-to-date doctoral programmes. Research in bioscience has been traditionally developed in various member faculties, therefore it was reasonable to organize an interdisciplinary programme involving all the best experts and giving doctoral candidates the use of advanced research equipment from several research departments.
The interdisciplinary doctoral programme in Biosciences combines science and experience from the following scientific fields: agronomy, biology, bioinformatics, biotechnology, bioengineering in health, agrifood microbiology, the economics of natural resources, the management of forest ecosystems, horticulture, landscape architecture, wood and bio-composites, nanosciences, nutrition, technical systems in bio-techniques, protection of natural heritage, cell sciences, animal sciences, and animal breeding. The programme is provided by the following member faculties: the Biotechnical Faculty, the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, the Faculty of Computer and Information Science, the Faculty of Engineering, and the Faculty of Health Sciences. The overall programme is coordinated by the Programme Council located at the Biotechnical Faculty. The execution of the programme is the responsibility of the faculties coordinating the specific scientific fields.
The main emphasis of the doctoral programme is on research work, on an interdisciplinary approach, and on cooperation with internationally established researchers in the field. The international exchange of students and staff is also foreseen. The programme offers two kinds of courses: compulsory core courses and two types of elective courses, such as elective theoretical courses and elective individual research courses. Particular emphasis is placed on close cooperation between doctoral candidates and their mentors. The doctoral candidates, together with their mentors, design the individual degree programmes by selecting courses that are consistent with the individual student’s research interest and ambitions. Elective courses can also be selected from other compatible programmes of the University of Ljubljana or other universities.
Interdisciplinary doctoral programme in ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION
Continuous changes in our environment are now the greatest concern of today’s world politicians and of society in general. The growing environmental pollution has changed social values and human behaviour in such a way that research into environmental hazards and the development of new technologies for protecting the environment are encouraged. The problems of environmental protection are heterogeneous, integrated and interdisciplinary. Problem solving is a result of the combined knowledge arising from natural sciences, social sciences and humanities, technical sciences, medicine, and others. The expectations for successful environmental protection are ensured by the integration of different disciplines, providing the basis for successful problem solving. The need for a contemporary and high quality doctoral programme was thus dictated by the need for new knowledge and technical solutions, which typically emerged in the border areas of various disciplines. Due to the great diversity of environmental problems, designing a new interdisciplinary doctoral programme seemed the most appropriate approach.
The interdisciplinary doctoral programme in Environmental protection links together experts from various faculties and departments with a common interest in protecting our environment. The programme is organized by the University of Ljubljana through its faculties: the Biotechnical Faculty, the Faculty of Economics, the Faculty of Social Sciences, the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geodesy, the Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Technology, the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, the Faculty of Maritime Studies and Transport, the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, the Faculty of Arts, the Faculty of Medicine, the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Engineering, the Faculty of Law, and the Veterinary Faculty. In addition to acquiring research and laboratory skills, students are also offered theoretical knowledge through the choice of several types of courses. As a rule, all students with various orientations obtain fundamental knowledge on environmental issues by taking two core courses; additional knowledge can be obtained through the choice of elective courses consistent with their research interest.
Interdisciplinary doctoral programme in MATERIALS SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING
Materials science and engineering is a discipline ranging between the science of inanimate nature and the science of process engineering that exceptionally marked the technical and social development of mankind in the previous century and which continues in the new millennium. Its results are practically applied in every discipline of natural sciences and engineering, in medicine, in information engineering, etc. A combination of various materials opens new possibilities for transport and space engineering, as well as for new energy sources.
The basic objective of the Interdisciplinary Doctoral programme in Material science and engineering, carried out by the Faculty of Natural Sciences, Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, and Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, is to qualify professionals to attain employment in research institutions in the areas of natural sciences and engineering, mainly in the development, manufacturing, and application of standard and modern functional materials, as well as in administrative services, or to continue their careers in academic institutions.
The programme consists of three scientific fields: Materials, Metallurgy, Mining Engineering, and Geotechnology. The programme is coordinated by the Programme Council, consisting of the representatives of the three faculties.
Interdisciplinary doctoral programme in STATISTICS
An advanced knowledge of statistics is of significant importance for science in general. Statistics is a significant and fundamental part of research in practically all academic/scientific disciplines. Advanced experts in statistics are sought by various services, from state administration to research departments in various companies. In the past decades, statistics as an independent scientific discipline has made an enormous contribution to science and society in general. It has become a tool that is applicable to diverse fields such as agriculture, biology, business and economics, education, engineering, law, medicine, social science, and others.
In the past few years, the University of Ljubljana has organized an interdisciplinary postgraduate programme in the field of statistics. As a result of this programme, the overall expertise in statistics has increased significantly, thus enabling the university to prepare a new doctoral programme based on experience of the noticeable advantages of an interdisciplinary approach. In spite of its great versatility, the programme defines two common compulsory courses in modern statistical approaches for students of all orientations, one modular compulsory course and several elective courses offering students the chance to specialize in their respective fields of interest. The interdisciplinary doctoral programme in Statistics is unique in Slovenia in offering possibilities for advanced education for all future experts in the general application of statistics needed in research institutions, public administration, and management.
The main goal of the interdisciplinary doctoral programme in Statistics is to further educate experts who have some fundamental knowledge in statistical theory, some experience in the field or some general statistical knowledge that is specific to an individual scientific field. The interdisciplinary doctoral programme in Statistics is composed of seven modules: Biotechnical faculty, Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Economics, Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Social Sciences. Doctoral candidates can choose their mentors from among internationally recognized experts in statistical science. Students and lecturers are encouraged to participate in international exchange schemes in the countries where ECTS is used.
Interdisciplinary doctoral programme in the BUILT ENVIRONMENT
The Built environment doctoral programme represents a scientific upgrade in the areas of civil engineering, geodesy, and spatial planning. The fundamental goal of the programme is to obtain highly trained researchers for all the scientific areas, which together contribute their expertise to the programme. By completing the programme, the graduate will be qualified for scientific thinking and solving scientific problems, as well as for cooperation in solving the demanding practical problems using an interdisciplinary approach.
The Built environment doctoral programme is organized by the Faculty of Civil and Geodetic Engineering with the cooperation of internationally recognized foreign experts and experts from other faculties of the University of Ljubljana. The programme is divided into three scientific areas: the most extensive part represents the area of Civil engineering; the study area of Geodesy includes geodesy and geoinformatics; the study area of Geology; the interdisciplinary area of Spatial planning and Land management is also suitable for students with previous education in various related areas. The main emphasis of the doctoral study is on research. In addition, the programme offers various kinds of taught subjects such as the compulsory common course, compulsory courses for scientific areas, and an extensive selection of elective courses. The programme enables student mobility in the framework of both organized forms of study and individual research work.
Interdisciplinary doctoral programme in the HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES
Humanities and social sciences together represent a very broad scientific area that is important for human life and the preservation and progress of society and culture. Scientific work in this extremely broad area is fostered in many different faculties of the University of Ljubljana. Research in particular faculties is usually more specific and is consistent with the faculty orientations, although many activities in different faculties are spliced. During the renovation of doctoral education at the University of Ljubljana, the experts in humanities and social sciences combined their efforts in preparing an interdisciplinary programme that on the one hand allows some traditional field specificities to be respected and, on the other, introduces a unified scheme to doctoral education in this large area. The programme links all scientists at the University of Ljubljana engaged in research in the area of humanities and social sciences.
The main purpose of the interdisciplinary doctoral programme in Humanities and Social Sciences is to assure doctoral candidates possess the fundamental knowledge necessary for their future scientific work in the area. The programme emphasises the connection between study and research, the cooperation between different institutions and the development of an interdisciplinary and innovative approach to study and research. The goal is to obtain well-versed doctoral candidates who are capable of developing all the necessary competences required for interdisciplinary research. The application of their knowledge at an internationally comparable level is expected.
The interdisciplinary doctoral programme in Humanities and social sciences combines all the fields in this area, fostered by the following faculties: the Faculty of Arts, the Faculty of Social Sciences, the Academy of Music, the Academy of Theatre, Film, Radio and Television, the Academy of Fine Arts and Design, the Faculty of Theology, the Faculty of Social Work. The doctoral programme allows the candidates to obtain the title Doctor of Science in 62 different scientific fields. The programme is comprehensive and very complex. The programme is coordinated by the Programme Council. In addition to the above faculties and academies, individual experts from research institutes were also invited to contribute their pedagogical expertise and research infrastructure.
Joint doctoral programme GOVERNANCE AND ECONOMICS IN THE PUBLIC SECTOR
The joint doctoral degree programme Governance and Economics in the Public Sector is interdisciplinary-oriented, as it contains subjects (content) from legal, economic, managerial, organisational and information sciences. Students have a wide choice of courses (content) within the individual disciplines, which means they can choose courses (content) in all the study fields (disciplines) they are interested in.
The Programme is intended for candidates who work or intend to work in settings that require and expect scientific-research work in the field of administration and business sciences in the public sector; this means the study, creation, development and application of new methodologies, technologies and skills in administration and business sciences. The joint doctoral degree programme is designed to provide a candidate with all the necessary deep theoretical-scientific and methodological administrative-legal, organizational, economic, managerial and IT skills that are necessary to solve the most demanding research and practical issues in the selected areas in the first two years of the study, which are then used during the continuation of the study to solve specific scientific-research problems within the doctoral dissertation. Therefore, the degree programme is designed to be highly interactive and multidisciplinary, which corresponds to the nature of scientific research on the one hand, and to the most demanding professional work on the other.
The joint doctoral degree programme Governance and Economics in the Public Sector is important for:
the development of administrative sciences for further transformation of public administration in the direction of modern democratic-oriented administrations,
the development of business sciences for the functioning of the public sector,
the development of existing and new educational programmes and scientific-research work in the field of administrative and business sciences, and
modernisation of administrative and business practices in the public sector.
The student has a choice of coursework in the first and second year. The choice of elective courses enables the interdisciplinarity of four different disciplines (informatics, economics, organization and law).
In the first year, the student selects (in agreement with the mentor and depending on the doctoral dissertation subject) Social Statistics or Optimization Models in the Public Sector elective methodological course and 2 required courses, as well as carries out two individual research works and a doctoral seminar.
In the second year, the student can choose between two modules: Public Governance and the Economics Module. The student completes 2 guiding courses, 2 elective courses, 2 research works and a doctoral seminar.
In the third year, the student carries out individual research work and a doctoral seminar as well as presents and defends his or her doctoral dissertation.
The student can choose from a range of elective courses at the Faculty of Administration of the University of Ljubljana, or at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Rijeka. He or she can also decide to take elective courses at any other domestic or foreign faculty for at least 10 ECTS credits. In the latter case, the student needs prior consent of the doctoral degree programme management. The curriculum of the joint doctoral study is to be realized in three years.
All elective courses will be available to students of related degree programmes from other faculties of the University of Ljubljana, University of Rijeka and from other universities with which the University of Ljubljana and University of Rijeka have concluded agreements on student exchange. The joint doctoral degree programme of Governance and Economics in the Public Sector is based on the principles of the Bologna Process. The doctoral students of the will therefore participate in various international exchanges (ERASMUS, BASELIUS, CEEPUS, etc.) and complete individual courses at other universities abroad in accordance with the ECTS credit system.
The Architecture doctoral programme offers education for future independent scientific researchers in the broadest area of architecture. Students are expected to demonstrate responsibility towards the cultural region and excellence at an international level. The fundamental aim of the programme is to offer an in-depth understanding of the theoretical and methodological concepts deriving from the essence of architecture as a science and an art. The student should also be able to develop new knowledge in the area of architecture as a generic field and to transfer scientific achievements and new knowledge into architectural practice.
The Architecture doctoral programme is organized and carried out by the Faculty of Architecture with the cooperation of individual internationally recognized experts in the area of architecture. The subjects offered by the programme are organized into three modules, the General module, the Architectural module, and the Interdisciplinary module. In accordance with the research project, doctoral students form their individual programme by choosing subjects from all three modules. Several forms of international collaboration are also offered to the students.
The doctoral programme in Chemical sciences is designed for highly qualified professionals with the intention of pursuing their careers in research-oriented institutions, assuming managing positions in chemical and chemistry-related industries, public services, or continuing their research in an academic environment. After completing the programme, graduates will acquire the ability to critically analyse, evaluate and create complex new ideas. They will be able to communicate in their scientific area and beyond and to promote scientific advancements in science and technology at the academic and applicative levels.
The doctoral programme in Chemical sciences is organized by the Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Technology. The programme covers three orientations: Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Chemical engineering. The main emphasis of the doctoral study is on research and research-related the activities. A special characteristic of the programme is the compulsory participation of students in lectures with guest lecturers and the compulsory preparation of the corresponding reports. A selection of modular elective courses is also available, offering students the latest scientific achievements in particular areas and adapted to the needs of the individual student.
Doctoral programme in COMPUTER AND INFORMATION SCIENCE
Computer and information science is one of the most innovative fields of science with a strong influence on the other scientific fields and all branches of the economy. Swift development in computer technology calls for highly educated human resources which are capable of developing new computer and information technologies and integrating them in innovative environments. The doctoral programme in Computer and information science is aimed to educate highly trained experts and future scientists who will be capable of independent research in the field of computer and information science. In addition, graduates from the programme are expected to gain communication skills by developing the ability to present their scientific achievements and working in groups of interdisciplinary teams.
The doctoral programme in Computer and Information Science is organized and carried out by the Faculty of Computer and Information Science. The programme consists of organized forms of study, research work and the preparation of the doctoral dissertation. The organized forms of study comprise several core courses in computer and information science and an overview course, the courses offering skills in scientific work, seminar courses and elective courses. The overview course is organized with the aim of refreshing students’ knowledge in a broader field of computer and information science and is particularly important for students with background knowledge other than in computer science.
The doctoral programme in Economics and Business is designed for doctoral candidates aiming to complement their knowledge with up-to-date scientific achievements in the area of the economy and business. The programme is intended for students who wish to receive a general and detailed overview of the latest research in the area, develop the ability to critically assess scientific results and to create new knowledge. Graduates of various second-cycle education programmes are allowed to enter the programme, and the entry requirements differ to some extent depending on the field of the candidate's entry qualifications.
The doctoral programme in Economics and Business is organized and is carried out by the School of Economics and Business with the cooperation of internationally recognized experts in the area of the economy and business. The programme offers two different tracks; three majors are possible within the economics track and ten majors are offered within the business track. Students will receive their theoretical background through the choice of a series of advanced courses, seminars and individual forms of study. The programme gives students the opportunity to enter different international exchange programmes, since the School of Economics and Business is a member of the European network of doctoral programmes (EDAMBA) and also coordinates a new network for doctoral studies in Central and Southeast Europe.
The doctoral programme Electrical Engineering is designed for independent researchers with broad professional skills in the area of electrical engineering and an in-depth basic methodological knowledge. The main fundamental goals of the programme comprise: to inseparably link the studies with research and development work, to encourage a comprehensive understanding of electrical engineering and its role in the broader scientific context, to master the state-of-the-art methods and technologies, and to prepare doctoral degree holders for creative scientific research and development work in the field of electrical engineering and broader subjects.
The doctoral programme in Electrical Engineering is organized by the Faculty of Electrical Engineering with the cooperation of individual experts in the area from other faculties of the University of Ljubljana. The programme is structured so that it gives priority to optional choices over the compulsory part of the studies. The offer of subjects in the programme is wide and versatile, which gives students the opportunity to plan their research careers and follow the needs of future employers as early as possible. The programme enables student mobility in the framework of both the organized forms of study and the individual research work.
Kinesiology is an interdisciplinary field investigating the science of intentional human movement with wide use in research, the sports and fitness industry, medical rehabilitation and other environments. Highly trained experts in the field are also important for the transfer of new knowledge into various professional environments. The doctoral programme in Kinesiology is targeted at highly trained experts and future scientists with broad professional knowledge who are capable of independent and creative research in the field of kinesiology and are also qualified for work in interdisciplinary team groups.
The doctoral programme in Kinesiology is organized by the Faculty of Sports with the cooperation of individual experts from other faculties at the University of Ljubljana. The programme inseparably connects scientific work and course work, prioritising electives over compulsory courses. The students will obtain the necessary theoretical basis and methodological skills in scientific work through the choice of compulsory courses, various elective courses with theoretical and methodological content, and various seminars. The programme also enables students’ mobility, as up to one third of their study requirements can be fulfilled elsewhere.
The doctoral programme in Legal studies is designed for graduates of the second cycle Bologna programmes who wish to enhance their knowledge in their chosen field of law. With an emphasis on individual research, the doctoral studies are aimed at the theoretical exploration of law and the analysis of legislation in case law. The goal of the doctoral studies is to carry out an in depth exploration of a certain legal problem, relation or institution; in the case of complex topics, the possibilities for an interdisciplinary approach are also open. Doctoral graduates will gain specialized legal knowledge using various methods of scientific research and in depth theoretical foundations related to the chosen topic of the student’s doctoral thesis research.
The doctoral programme in Legal studies is organized by the Faculty of Law with the cooperation of recognized experts in related areas from other faculties of the University of Ljubljana. The programme comprises thirteen modules: Civil Law, Labour Law and Social Security Law, Economic Analyses and Economic Policies, European Law, Commercial Law, Criminal Law, Criminology, International Law, Legal History, Roman Law , Theory of the State and Legal Theory, Public Administration, Constitutional Law. In addition to the student’s individual research work, the programme includes compulsory general subjects, compulsory subjects of the module, optional subjects, and doctoral seminars. Doctoral students are allowed to fulfil some of their study requirements within other doctoral programmes at the University of Ljubljana or, in the case of international exchange programmes, at other universities.
Mathematics and physics represent two fundamental areas of science that are also important foundations for the development of other scientific fields in natural sciences, technology, social sciences and others. Doctoral studies are thus not only important for development in the area of mathematics and physics but also for developments in other related areas. The main objective of the Mathematics and Physics programme is to train highly qualified researchers for independent research in their narrow specializations. The structure of the programme in the organized part guarantees students a sufficient wider knowledge that is indispensable for a young expert involved as an active member of large interdisciplinary research groups.
The doctoral programme in Mathematics and Physics is organized by the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics with cooperation of internationally recognized foreign experts and experts from other faculties of the University of Ljubljana. The programme contains two sub-programmes, Physics and Mathematics, enabling the students to specialize in one of the following scientific areas: Physics, Physics Education, Meteorology, Nuclear physics, Mathematics, and Mathematical Education. The main emphasis of the doctoral study is on research and research-related activities. A selection of courses (module-specific and elective) is also available, allowing students to form individual study programmes consistent with their research interest.

The doctoral programme in Mechanical Engineering is targeted at graduates of natural science and engineering programmes to provide highly trained experts and future scientists in the fields of mechanical engineering who will be capable of independent research, the creation of new knowledge and the transfer of new knowledge into the economic environment.
The doctoral programme in Mechanical engineering is organized by the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering with the cooperation of some internationally recognized foreign experts. The main emphasis of the doctoral study is on research. In addition, students will obtain the necessary theoretical basis and methodological skills for scientific work through mandatory seminars and elective courses. In accordance with the programme, students can study two semesters at other universities and are allowed to satisfy up to one third of their study requirements elsewhere.
Doctoral programme in TEACHER EDUCATION AND EDUCATIONAL SCIENCES
The doctoral programme in Teacher education and Educational science is aimed at highly trained future experts in the larger area of education. The fundamental aim of the programme is to create highly trained experts and future scientists who will understand the basic concepts of theoretical and methodological approaches in the area of teacher education and educational science. The programme devotes special attention to the interrelationship of teaching, learning, and the assessment processes, since these are the key factors in developing the appropriate competences. Graduates of the programme will be capable of creating new knowledge in the area and solving scientific problems with an interdisciplinary approach.
The doctoral programme in Teacher Education and Educational Science is organized by the Faculty of Education with the cooperation of recognized experts in related areas from other faculties of the University of Ljubljana. The programme offers two study orientations: in the scientific area of Teacher Education and in the scientific area of Educational Sciences, both structured modularly. The programme curriculum consists of student research work and organized forms of study, and it comprises obligatory modules, study orientation modules, and elective modules. In its content, the doctoral programme follows the approach defined by the European TUNING project and therefore fulfils all the criteria for international exchange in Europe.
Doctoral programme of TEXTILE ENGINEERING, GRAPHIC COMMUNICATION AND TEXTILE DESIGN
In the developed economies, the textile industry is facing important challenges since its future largely depends on the development of new technologically advanced products. The growth of advanced technologies is inevitably dependent on the availability of the latest expertise and the education of professionals with advanced knowledge and skills in the area. The fundamental goal of the programme is to produce highly trained experts and future scientists who will understand the basic concepts of the theoretical and methodological approaches and will be capable of creating new knowledge in the area of textile engineering, graphic and interactive communication, and textile design.
The doctoral programme of Textile Engineering, Graphic Communication and Textile design is organized and carried out by the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Engineering with the cooperation of recognized experts from other University of Ljubljana faculties and other institutions. The programme offers studies in three research fields: Graphic and Interactive Communication, Textile Engineering and Textile Design. In addition to the students’ research, the programme offers two groups of subjects – basic subjects and optional subjects – which are further divided into two subgroups related to all three research and study areas. Doctoral students are allowed to fulfil some of their study requirements from other doctoral programmes at the University of Ljubljana and elsewhere.
The doctoral programme in Theology is designed for graduates from previous programmes of the second cycle of higher education who wish to enhance their knowledge and acquire necessary competences in the area of theology and wider areas of humanities and social sciences. The basic goals of the doctoral programme are to prepare the candidates for top-level independent, critical-reflective, interdisciplinary and polyvalent research work, for solving the most abstract and complex issues, and for the interpretation of new cognitions in theology. The graduates will acquire a series of competences related to their future research work in theology, as well as a series of practical competences, such as skills in intercultural and interreligious meditation and coordination between different domains of humanities and social sciences.
The doctoral programme in Theology is organized by the Faculty of Theology. The programme integrates two scientific areas, Theology and Marital and Family Therapy. In addition to the individual student’s research, the programme includes a series of subjects offering students the necessary theoretical knowledge and practical skills for their research. According to the content, the subjects are classified as the compulsory general subject, compulsory specific subjects, optional specific subjects and external optional subjects. The students are allowed to participate in international exchange schemes such as Socrates/Erasmus.
Doctoral programme in TRANSPORT AND MARITIME SCIENCES
The fields of transport and maritime sciences integrate knowledge of technical-technological systems and processes in the maritime, transport, traffic, and transport logistics industries. The need for a high quality and modern doctoral degree programme that aims at the acquisition of relevant knowledge in the fields of transport and maritime sciences is dictated by highly dynamic development in these fields. In fact, both can be classified among the most important economic activities worldwide. Science-based solutions to highly complex problems in the fields of transport and maritime sciences can only be provided by experts at the highest level of education. The doctoral degree programme enables doctoral students to acquire complex knowledge at the highest level of theoretical and research expertise.
The doctoral programme in Transport and Maritime Sciences is organized and carried out by the Faculty of Maritime Studies and Transport in cooperation with renowned foreign experts. The programme integrates two fields: maritime sciences and transport. In the field of maritime sciences, doctoral students will acquire relevant knowledge in navigation, marine engineering, port systems, and protection of the marine environment; in the field of transport, doctoral students will acquire relevant knowledge in traffic technology, transport logistics, traffic safety, and integrated traffic policy, all of which enable creative and independent research of scientific research problems, critical evaluation of research results, development of new research methodology, and transmission of new technologies and knowledge into practice.
