EUTOPIA_HEALTH Science Cafe: caring for drinking water is not a matter of rules, but a common concern for all
At the Science Cafe event, which aimed to transfer knowledge about drinking water from academia to the public, we explored how drinking water is produced, the factors that influence it, and how individuals can improve water quality. We also discussed how to better inform the public about the state of their local drinking water.

The remarkable success of the Academic Choir Tone Tomšič, University of Ljubljana, at an international choir competition
Last weekend, the Academic Choir (Akademski pevski zbor – APZ) Tone Tomšič, University of Ljubljana, achieved remarkable success at the 8th International Baltic Sea Choir Competition in Jūrmala, Latvia – one of the six European competitions whose winners qualify for the prestigious European Grand Prix. Under the direction of Rahela Durič, the Slovenian choir won the Jūrmala City Grand Prix trophy with an impressive 95.67 points out of 100, along with a generous monetary prize. The choir also received three special awards.

Artificial Intelligence: Opportunities and Risks
Artificial intelligence (AI) is shaping everyday life, scientific work, and education today, while at the same time raising numerous questions about ethics, responsibility, and the future of society. Recently, the media has reported on a tragic case in the U.S., where a chatbot is alleged to have contributed to the death of a teenager, as well as on debates within the scientific community regarding the use of AI in peer review and on major investments in research into the impact of this technology on academic programs. We are also following developments in education, politics, meteorology, and culture, where AI is already making a visible impact. Winners of the Dr Uroš Seljak Prizes and Commendations for 2025
The recipients of the Dr Uroš Seljak Prizes and Commendations for 2025 have been announced. These awards are presented for the best scientific publications by students in the first and second cycles of study in Slovenia. The call for applications is issued each academic year by the University of Ljubljana (UL) in cooperation with the American Slovenian Educational Foundation (ASEF).

How is new knowledge created, who produces it, and how is it transferred to new generations of researchers?
Relationships between doctoral students and their supervisors play a key role in the production of knowledge. This particular form of scientific collaboration is being studied at the Centre for Methodology and Informatics, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Ljubljana. Their findings show that successful knowledge transfer depends not only on the motivation of the mentees, but also on the quality of supervision. Moreover, having more than one supervisor contributes to the successful completion of a doctorate.

Dr. Dominik Kozjek Recipient of the Prestigious ERC Starting Grant
Assist. Prof. Dr. Dominik Kozjek has been successful in one of the most prestigious research calls, securing a European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grant to launch his independent research career. He received €1.5 million in funding for the MeltingWel project, which will enable the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Ljubljana to conduct groundbreaking research and establish a top-level research group over the next five years.

Assist. Prof. Dr. Jasmina Šepetavc, researcher at the Centre for Cultural and Religious Studies (CCRS) at the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Ljubljana, is the recipient of a prestigious European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grant. She received the grant for the project QEAST.

UL FE and UKC Ljubljana join forces to purchase state-of-the-art medical equipment for treating complex cardiac arrhythmias
The Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the University of Ljubljana (UL FE) and the University Medical Centre (UKC) Ljubljana have joined forces and, as part of a development and research project, secured funding for the purchase of the most advanced device currently available for the treatment of complex cardiac arrhythmias. The project partners obtained the funds through a call for proposals by the Slovenian Research and Innovation Agency. The device represents the very forefront of interventional treatment for cardiac arrhythmias.

After a break of about one month, we at the Digital University Center are back with the AI Newsletter. Although summer is a time that usually brings rest and tranquility, the same cannot be said for the field of artificial intelligence in education. In recent weeks and ahead of the start of the new academic year, news in the field of AI applications in education has been dominated by reports on the introduction of various practical training programs on generative artificial intelligence, concerns regarding the authenticity of scientific publications and online sources, and discussions addressing the ethical, pedagogical, and psychosocial aspects of chatbot use. Below, we present ten interesting news stories intended to highlight current developments, raise some thought-provoking questions—and answer a few of them—and encourage you to conduct your own research.

Digital Maturity of Young People in Slovenia
Young people acquire most of their digital skills from their peers, while schools often lack sufficient digital content. The two main challenges they face in the digital world are digital illiteracy—both their own and that of teachers and parents—and the need for digital disconnection. These findings come from the research project Digital Maturity of Youth, conducted by the Faculty of Social Sciences and the Faculty of Education at the University of Ljubljana.

Slovenian universities join the UNI-SI (Festival of Slovenian Universities) project
A press conference took place at the University of Ljubljana Rector’s Office at which members of the Slovenian Rectors’ Conference presented details of the joint UNI-SI (Festival of Slovenian Universities) project. The festival, which takes place at the Ljubljana Exhibition and Convention Centre on 16 and 17 January 2026, will be the first time that the eight largest Slovenian universities have appeared together.

All three Slovenian public universities and the Biotech Hills institute join forces to develop the biotech and pharmaceutical ecosystem
The rectors of the universities of Ljubljana, Maribor and Primorska today signed a strategic agreement on cooperation in the pharmaceutical and biotech field with the management of the Biotech Hills institute. At the signing ceremony, which was also attended by higher education, science and innovation minister Dr Igor Papič and deputy director-general of the Directorate for Industry, Enterprise and Internationalisation at the Ministry of the Economy, Tourism and Sport Matej Skočir, the signatories committed themselves to strengthening the Slovenian biotech and pharmaceutical ecosystem over the long term, and to encouraging suitably educated personnel to play a key role in development and competitiveness and to ensuring high added value. This event represents an important step towards integrating the research and academic spheres more closely with industry, and to securing greater strategic investments in the sector.

Generative Artificial Intelligence Has Surpassed Smartphones and the Internet in Speed of Adoption
The number of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) users in Slovenia is rapidly increasing. In one year, the number has doubled. Most users utilize ChatGPT, and usage is becoming increasingly frequent. More than half of the population uses GenAI weekly, and nearly a quarter use it daily. Despite growing usage, Slovenia still lags behind the most developed countries.

80 years of the complete UL MF: A milestone for the independent study of medicine and dental medicine in Slovenia
On 31 July 2025, the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Ljubljana (UL MF) celebrates 80 years since its full establishment. This was a key moment in the history of UL MF, as Slovenia was, for the first time, able to educate doctors and dentists entirely at home, gaining professional independence in the field of medicine.
