EUTOPIA Alliance representatives visit the University of Ljubljana for international sustainability management assessment
Between 18 and 19 May 2026, the University of Ljubljana (UL) hosted a pilot peer international assessment of sustainability management at UL by the international EUTOPIA Alliance. The purpose of the visit was to carry out an external assessment of the progress made in implementing the UL Sustainability Strategy, and it also provided a platform for discussing both existing best practices supporting the University’s sustainable operations and opportunities for further development in this area.

Twelve bicycles serviced and repaired at the student bicycle repair workshop
On Thursday, 14 May 2026, the University of Ljubljana, in cooperation with the May Games student festival, organised a bicycle repair workshop at the student residence campus in Rožna dolina. The workshop was led by Matej Jager, a student at the UL Biotechnical Faculty.

Ahead of World Bee Day, we created artworks inspired by nectar-producing plants
On Thursday, 14 May 2026, we gathered at the Botanical Garden of the University of Ljubljana to explore the fascinating world of nectar-producing plants. These plants also served as the central motif and inspiration for the creative part of the workshop, during which participants worked using the screen-printing technique.

European Student Cycling Challenge invites you to help shape the future of mobility
The University of Ljubljana supports the CYCLE2CONNECT – European Student Cycling Challenge 2027 project and invites students to take part in one of Europe’s largest initiatives promoting sustainable mobility, an active lifestyle and international networking. The project is part of the Erasmus+ Sport programme and brings together students from 12 European countries in a shared cycling challenge. The initiative aims to encourage the integration of cycling into everyday life, improve young people’s health, and reduce adverse environmental impacts.

International spring school on the Environment and Sustainable Development brings together students and experts in Ljubljana
The international spring school entitled Environment and Sustainable Development took place at the UL Faculty of Education between 20 and 24 April 2026 as part of the Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Programmes (BIP). The event was organised by the UNESCO Chair on Teacher Education for Sustainable Development in cooperation with the University of Klagenfurt, Private University College of Teacher Education Augustinum in Graz, and the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.

Installation of a new bicycle service station at the Rožna Dolina campus in support of sustainable micromobility
In collaboration with Študentski Dom Ljubljana, the body responsible for managing the halls of residence, and following an initiative from the Student Community Gardens organisation, the University of Ljubljana installed a new bicycle service station at the Rožna Dolina campus on Wednesday 15 April. The aim is to encourage UL students to choose sustainable forms of micromobility such as cycling for their daily transport needs.

Amina Gačo Jež of the UL Biotechnical Faculty wins science slam
This year’s Food for the Brain Festival concluded at Kino Šiška on 26 March 2026 with the science slam event “(Algo)rhythm of the Planet”. At the event, researchers presented a range of digital solutions for a sustainable future in an engaging and entertaining way. The jury and the audience were most impressed by Amina Gačo Jež of the UL Biotechnical Faculty.

University of Ljubljana receives the ED.VITA Grand Prize for its ULTRA project
The University of Ljubljana (UL) has received the ED.VITA Grand Prize for the “UL for a Sustainable Society – ULTRA” project. Prizes for individual categories have also been won by the Academy of Fine Arts and Design, the Biotechnical Faculty, the Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Technology, the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Engineering, the Faculty of Education and the Veterinary Faculty. The ED.VITA prize is the first and only national award designed to recognise sustainable initiatives and practices in higher education.

Only if artificial intelligence is developed responsibly will it be capable of supporting a sustainable future
On 16 March we opened this year’s Food For Thought festival at the Faculty of Computer and Information Science (UL FRI) with a round-table discussion titled “Code to Drive a Better World: Challenges and Opportunities in the Development of Artificial Intelligence for Delivering a Sustainable Future”. The discussion focused on how AI might support sustainable development goals, and where the new environmental, social and ethical issues could arise.

Food For Thought Festival 2026: Sustainable Digitalisation and Digitalisation for Sustainability
Between 16 and 26 March, the University of Ljubljana will host the third edition of the Food For Thought Festival, a series of events dedicated to addressing current societal challenges related to sustainability. This year’s festival will focus on the sustainable aspects of digitalisation, and on the synergies and deviations between the two development priorities/transitions: the green transition and the digital transition.

Upon the conclusion of the ULTRA project, the University of Ljubljana presented the results of its study programme reforms
The final conference of the ULTRA – University of Ljubljana (UL) for a Sustainable Society project, through which the UL overhauled 29 higher education study programmes, was held at the Ljubljana Exhibition and Convention Centre. At the conference entitled New Knowledge for New Generations, the UL presented the results of the three-year project, which was part of the national Recovery and Resilience Plan (NOO).

As part of the NOO ULTRA project, the University of Ljubljana (UL), in cooperation with the UL Botanical Garden, carried out the greening of two Ljubljana Passenger Transport (LPP) bus shelters near Ljubljana Zoo on Thursday, 2 October 2025.

University of Ljubljana receives DGNB Gold pre-certificate for the new Veterinary Faculty building
The new building project of the Veterinary Faculty at the University of Ljubljana (UL VF), which will deliver state-of-the-art research and teaching facilities, has been awarded the Gold pre-certificate by the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB).

UL and MOL consolidating cooperation for a sustainable, creative and inclusive future of the city
The University of Ljubljana (UL) and the City of Ljubljana (MOL) continue to actively implement the long-term cooperation agreement signed in January 2023, grounded in a shared vision of Ljubljana as a city of knowledge, creativity and sustainable development. As part of the 2025 action plan, collaboration between the two institutions is deepening further through a range of joint initiatives that connect the academic community, municipal services and the residents of Ljubljana.

UL Biotechnical Faculty establishes two centres for science and sustainable development
On 19 May 2025, the Biotechnical Faculty at the University of Ljubljana (UL BF) established two new specialised units: the One Health – Environment Centre and the Centre for Circular Bioeconomy. Their purpose is to strategically integrate knowledge and address key societal challenges.

The University of Ljubljana (Univerza v Ljubljani) has officially joined the Global Education Coalition (GEC), a UNESCO-led, multi-sector platform launched in March 2020 to safeguard the right to education during global disruptions, such as the COVID-19 pandemic.

Food for Thought Festival: Scientists discuss the biodiversity crisis and possible solutions
From 12 to 15 May 2025, the University of Ljubljana (UL) will host the second edition of the Food for Thought Festival, a series of events dedicated to addressing current societal challenges related to sustainability. The overarching theme of this year's festival is the preservation and enhancement of biodiversity. The festival features a variety of free events, ranging from panel discussions to workshops for students, employees, and the general public. Its aim is to raise awareness of the biodiversity crisis and the importance of strengthening biodiversity, both in urban environments and more broadly. Biodiversity is crucial for maintaining the healthy functioning of ecosystems and contributes, among other benefits, to human well-being and, through ecosystem services, to ensuring food security and diversity.

The Guild: A sustainable and just transition must remain a priority amid emerging global crises
On 1 April 2025, The Guild – an international network of European research-intensive universities – published a new policy document reaffirming the universities' commitment to addressing the challenges of the sustainability transition with recommendations for policymakers. The University of Ljubljana (UL), a member of The Guild, actively contributed to the preparation of this key publication.

University of Ljubljana adopts its first comprehensive sustainability strategy for 2025–2030, with a vision up to 2040
At its 36th regular session on Tuesday, 25 March 2025, the Senate of the University of Ljubljana (UL) adopted the UL Sustainability Strategy 2025–2030 (including its vision up to 2040). The Strategy aims to strengthen the UL’s contribution and commitment to co-creating a sustainable transformation of society and a shared sustainable future – through its research, development and artistic work, as well as its daily operational processes. With this step, the UL joins other higher education institutions that have already outlined their commitments and goals relating to the sustainable transformation of higher education and the broader natural and social environment through strategic documents of this kind.

DGNB Gold pre-certificate for the Faculty of Medicine
We are proud to report that we have been awarded the DGNB Gold pre-certificate for sustainable building, which will enable the UL Faculty of Medicine to create modern research and teaching premises. The Faculty of Medicine thus becomes the first university building and first public building in Slovenia (and in this part of Europe) to hold this certificate, and one of only five buildings in Slovenia so far to have obtained a certificate that is making a significant contribution to the development of sustainable building in this country.
