The Slovenian smart box, developed at the UL FE, has returned from Antarctica
How reliable are Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) when a ship sails through the harshest conditions on Earth? This question was answered by researchers from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the University of Ljubljana, the “Jožef Stefan” Institute, and the Faculty of Maritime Studies and Transport of the University of Ljubljana. On board the Italian icebreaker Laura Bassi, they carried out a 200-day research expedition. The collected data are crucial for developing the next generations of autonomous ships.

The University of Ljubljana presents four major interdisciplinary research projects worth over EUR 10 million
At a press conference today, the University of Ljubljana (UL) unveiled four internationally groundbreaking interdisciplinary research projects, which will receive a total of more than EUR 10 million in funding over the next five years. The projects were selected through an internal call for proposals issued by the UL, aimed at fostering cooperation among its member faculties and strengthening research excellence and international visibility.

The recipients of the highest national prizes and awards in the field of science for 2025 have been announced
The Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation, Dr Igor Papič, and the President of the Committee of the Republic of Slovenia for the Awarding of Prizes and Awards for Outstanding Achievements in Scientific Research and Development, Prof. Dr Nataša Vaupotič, have announced this year’s recipients of the highest national prizes and awards in the field of science. The recipients include several scientists from the University of Ljubljana.

UL FE and UKC Ljubljana join forces to purchase state-of-the-art medical equipment for treating complex cardiac arrhythmias
The Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the University of Ljubljana (UL FE) and the University Medical Centre (UKC) Ljubljana have joined forces and, as part of a development and research project, secured funding for the purchase of the most advanced device currently available for the treatment of complex cardiac arrhythmias. The project partners obtained the funds through a call for proposals by the Slovenian Research and Innovation Agency. The device represents the very forefront of interventional treatment for cardiac arrhythmias.

UL FE receives a special award for a promotional project in the field of renewable energies
At the Energy Days event, organised by the Finance newspaper, the winners of the Energy Awards were announced. A special award for a promotional project in the field of renewable energy was presented to the Faculty of Electrical Engineering for its virtual energy community project, developed within the European Aurora project.

Mark Weber from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology visits UL FE
Mark Weber, an artificial intelligence researcher from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), visited the UL Faculty of Electrical Engineering (UL FE), accompanied by the Dean of UL FE, Prof. Dr Marko Topič. During his visit, he explored key AI projects currently being developed at the Faculty.

With Artificial Intelligence Towards Better Research in Digital Humanities
The Faculty of Computer and Information Science at the University of Ljubljana (UL FRI) has been successful in the Horizon Europe research and innovation program. It has secured €2.5 million for a five-year ERA Chair project – Artificial Intelligence for Digital Humanities (AI4DH). As part of the project, an interdisciplinary Centre of Excellence for Artificial Intelligence in Digital Humanities will be established.

With a universal mechanism of cellular movement to new possibilities for treating cancer
Cell migration in the body is a fundamental biological phenomenon. Immune cells constantly search for pathogens throughout the body, while cancer cells migrate, causing metastases. To better understand the migration of immune and cancer cells, researchers, including Assoc. Prof. Dr. Samo Penič and Prof. Dr. Aleš Iglič from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, University of Ljubljana, have developed a universal physical model of cell movement. This has also paved the way for new possibilities in the treatment of cancer.

SMART ERA: SMART Community-led Transition for Europe's Rural Areas
Europe's rural areas are facing processes of depopulation, particularly of young people, which is leading to an ageing demographic profile. This is causing a number of structural problems, such as fewer jobs, deteriorating infrastructure and a shrinking supply of services of general interest. On the other hand, development of digital technologies and the increase in remote work have also led to a reverse trend of rural in-migration, which was most evident during the COVID-19 pandemic. These trends can be harnessed for rural growth through smart adaptation strategies, development of new integrated solutions, and the integration of local knowledge and cultural heritage.

Smart Agro Grape – Digital platform for vineyard managers
How can you set up smart vineyards that would be sustainably oriented and that would only use the essential quantities of sprays and fertilisers? This challenge has been taken up by the European project Smart Agro Grape, in which the lead partner is the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the University of Ljubljana. The project will involve the development of a digital platform and a mobile phone app, which will allow vineyard managers to access / get notifications and thereby to respond early to situations that could lead to the onset of various diseases in the vineyard, and will enable more commercially successful operation.

Lea Rems, PhD, from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the University of Ljubljana, successful in the European Research Council’s call for proposals
The European Commission has published the results of the call for proposals for the European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grant 2023. After a ten-month evaluation process, 400 projects were selected for funding from almost 2,700 applications from all over the world. Among the successful applicants is the researcher Lea Rems, PhD, who will lead the EUR 1.5 million, five-year ERC project REINCARNATION at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, University of Ljubljana (UL FE).

New method for treating the cardiac arrhythmias through electroporation
Slovenian scientists have contributed significantly to the development of treating heart arrhythmia using electroporation. This involves a procedure of ablation of the heart muscle with high-voltage electric pulses, in which researchers from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the University of Ljubljana under the leadership of Professor Damijan Miklavčič are collaborating with the American company Medtronic, one of the leading medical equipment companies in the world. The results of the clinical study were presented at the beginning of March by Dr. Atul Verma, head of clinical research at McGill University in Montreal, Canada, at the congress of the American College of Cardiology in New Orleans, USA.
