Construction of the Vrazov Trg campus in its final phase: Next year, students and researchers will move into the new premises of the UL Faculty of Medicine
The construction of the new Vrazov Trg I campus of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Ljubljana (UL MF), is progressing successfully and is nearing its final phase. The building – the first university project in Slovenia to receive the prestigious DGNB Gold sustainability certificate – will soon provide students and researchers with modern, energy-efficient and sustainably designed spaces for teaching, research and collaboration. This is one of the most financially ambitious projects that Slovenia will complete by 2026, supported by European funds under the Recovery and Resilience Plan.

The recipients of the highest national prizes and awards in the field of science for 2025 have been announced
The Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation, Dr Igor Papič, and the President of the Committee of the Republic of Slovenia for the Awarding of Prizes and Awards for Outstanding Achievements in Scientific Research and Development, Prof. Dr Nataša Vaupotič, have announced this year’s recipients of the highest national prizes and awards in the field of science. The recipients include several scientists from the University of Ljubljana.

Winners of the Dr Uroš Seljak Prizes and Commendations for 2025
The recipients of the Dr Uroš Seljak Prizes and Commendations for 2025 have been announced. These awards are presented for the best scientific publications by students in the first and second cycles of study in Slovenia. The call for applications is issued each academic year by the University of Ljubljana (UL) in cooperation with the American Slovenian Educational Foundation (ASEF).

80 years of the complete UL MF: A milestone for the independent study of medicine and dental medicine in Slovenia
On 31 July 2025, the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Ljubljana (UL MF) celebrates 80 years since its full establishment. This was a key moment in the history of UL MF, as Slovenia was, for the first time, able to educate doctors and dentists entirely at home, gaining professional independence in the field of medicine.

Government provides funding for the new UL FFA building and the UL MF Vrazov Trg campus with new source of funding
At its session on 10 July 2025, the Government of the Republic of Slovenia approved the inclusion of the new building for the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Ljubljana (UL FFA) in the Development Programmes Plan 2025–2028. The project is valued at EUR 133 million. At the same time, the Government also approved a new source of funding, amounting to EUR 17.6 million, for the Vrazov Trg campus of the University of Ljubljana’s Faculty of Medicine (UL MF).

University Clinic Golnik becomes an associate member of the University of Ljubljana
Today, the University of Ljubljana (UL) and the University Clinic of Respiratory and Allergic Diseases Golnik signed an associate membership agreement, strengthening cooperation between higher education and healthcare institutions.

Progress of the construction of the Triple Campus of UL MF: Completion of the construction, start of the interior works
The Faculty of Medicine of the University of Ljubljana (UL MF) is building a modern campus at Vrazov Trg, which is set to be completed mid-2026 and will meet the growing spatial needs for studies, research and professional work. Work is progressing as planned, with the interior fit-out phase and the completion of construction on the south wing currently underway.

Dr Ana Mayer Kansky Awards bestowed for the third time at the UL
On Wednesday, 18 June 2025, the Dr Ana Mayer Kansky Awards for outstanding doctoral theses were awarded for the third time in the Assembly Hall at the Rector’s Office of the University of Ljubljana (UL). The awards were presented to Dr Matej Perovnik, Dr Faris Kočan, Dr Aleša Bricelj, Dr Duje Kodžoman, and Dr Katja Klinar. The award ceremony was held under the patronage of the President of the Republic of Slovenia, Nataša Pirc Musar.

The Senate of the University of Ljubljana approved an increase in the number of places available at the Faculty of Medicine
At today’s regular session, the Senate of the University of Ljubljana (UL) approved the proposal from the Faculty of Medicine (UL MF) to increase the number of admission places to higher years of study for the academic year 2025/26. Twenty additional admission places will be offered for the integrated master's study programme in Medicine, and five additional places for the programme in Dental Medicine. These places are intended for citizens of the Republic of Slovenia and are subject to approval by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Innovation.

SpaceDent Exhibit Now Part of the Permanent Exhibition at the Noordung Center
The permanent exhibition of the Herman Potočnik Noordung Space Technology Center in Vitanje now features an exhibit from the SpaceDent research project – the first Slovenian student project conducted within the ESA Academy programme of the European Space Agency (ESA), in collaboration with the University of Ljubljana’s Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, where students successfully simulated dental procedures in microgravity during a parabolic flight.

Associate membership agreement between the University of Ljubljana and the Institute of Oncology
An associate membership agreement between the University of Ljubljana and the Institute of Oncology, Ljubljana was signed today at the UL Rector’s Office by Gregor Majdič, Rector of the University of Ljubljana, and Zlata Štiblar Kisić, Director of the Institute of Oncology. The Institute of Oncology’s status as an associate member institution of the University of Ljubljana was approved by the Senate of the University of Ljubljana at its September sitting.

DGNB Gold pre-certificate for the Faculty of Medicine
We are proud to report that we have been awarded the DGNB Gold pre-certificate for sustainable building, which will enable the UL Faculty of Medicine to create modern research and teaching premises. The Faculty of Medicine thus becomes the first university building and first public building in Slovenia (and in this part of Europe) to hold this certificate, and one of only five buildings in Slovenia so far to have obtained a certificate that is making a significant contribution to the development of sustainable building in this country.

Despite numerous cases, familial Hypercholesterolaemia is still insufficiently recognised and treated
Familial hypercholesterolaemia, an inherited disorder accompanied by increased levels of LDL or ‘bad’ cholesterol and a greater susceptibility to the early onset of cardiovascular diseases, is still insufficiently recognised and treated, despite the high number of cases. This has been shown in the cross-sectional study ‘Familial hypercholesterolaemia in children and adolescents from 48 countries: a cross-sectional study’, which involved the participation of researchers from the University of Ljubljana Faculty of Medicine.

University of Ljubljana participates in ground-breaking research proving the advantages of prescribing medication based on genetic code
The research findings of an international group from seven countries, headed by researchers from Leiden University Medical Centre (LUMC), and involving the participation of researchers from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Ljubljana, show that patients experience as much as 30% fewer serious adverse side effects of medication if the choice of medicines is adapted to their genetic code. The study, which was published in medical journal The Lancet, is the first to demonstrate the advantages of prescribing medication from various therapeutic groups based on the genetic code of the individual patient.
