The Faculty of Computer Science and Informatics of the University of Ljubljana (UL FRI) is the largest Slovenian higher education institution for computer science and informatics with the longest tradition of education in this field. It was founded on 1 January 1996 after the division of the former Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science into two faculties, the Faculty of Computer Science and Informatics and the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the UL, and the study of computer science itself began in 1973.

The primary mission of the UL FRI is to educate quality computer and information science professionals at all levels and to ensure the scientific and professional development of the field. In doing so, it aims to be among the leading faculties in its field in Central and South-Eastern Europe and to be recognised worldwide.

Through its teaching and research achievements, it aims to contribute to the development of the profession and to the general development of the environment in which it operates. At first level, it runs four study programmes, the Bachelor and Higher Professional Programme in Computer Science and Informatics, and two interdisciplinary programmes, Computer Science and Mathematics together with the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of UL and Administrative Informatics together with the Faculty of Administration of UL. At second and third level, in addition to the basic programmes in Computer Science and Informatics, it participates in a number of interdisciplinary programmes together with other faculties and universities. In addition to regular education, it also provides complementary education for computer professionals and professionals from other disciplines who need IT skills.

Another special and very personal aspect is the training of young researchers who, during their postgraduate studies, are introduced to research and scientific work under the mentorship of university professors. The Faculty cooperates closely with industry and with related higher education and research institutions at home and abroad.
