The tradition of top-class studies at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of the University of Ljubljana (UL FMF) began with the foundation of the University of Ljubljana in 1919, whose first rector was the world-famous mathematician Josip Plemelj. Today, the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics is one of the most successful UL faculties in terms of the quality of its researchers and teachers, with extensive cooperation with institutes and universities around the world.

The Faculty has approximately 1200 undergraduate and 150 postgraduate students. For years, students have ranked the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics among the best in the country in surveys. As Slovenia's central mathematics and physics school, the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics offers a range of interesting and high-quality study programmes, fully comparable with the best universities worldwide.
