    Letter to Serbian students: The University of Ljubljana stands with you

    University of Ljubljana strongly condemns the violence the against peaceful protesters in Belgrade. In response to the ongoing demonstrations, the Rector of the University of Ljubljana, Prof. Dr Gregor Majdič, sent a letter of support to the University of Belgrade, a partner institution of the UL.

    University of Ljubljana ranked among the world’s top 400 universities in ten subjects by QS in 2025

    The 15th edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject was published in March 2025. The University of Ljubljana (UL) ranked among the top 400 universities in ten subjects or programmes, improving upon last year’s ranking by adding an additional subject. It was placed among the world’s top 500 universities in a total of 14 subjects, up from 12 last year.

    The University of Ljubljana will play a key role in establishing the Slovenian Artificial Intelligence Factory

    Slovenia has secured European funding for the establishment of a new supercomputer and the Slovenian Artificial Intelligence Factory. The supercomputer will be tailored for building and utilizing artificial intelligence models, while the AI factory will help Slovenian experts create an ecosystem that provides key services for the development and application of artificial intelligence in one place for businesses, research organizations, and the public sector.     Novartis donates to the Srčna UL fund for students in need

    Novartis, the leading pharmaceutical company in the development and manufacture of innovative medicines in Slovenia, has supported the Srčna UL (Engl. Heart UL) fund with a donation of EUR 4,000. The funds will go to students in need who applied for the latest Heart UL call for applications.

    German Ambassador Sylvia Groneick visits the University of Ljubljana

    On 17 February, the University of Ljubljana (UL) welcomed a visit from the German Ambassador, Sylvia Groneick. The Rector of UL, Prof. Dr Gregor Majdič, presented the extensive cooperation between the UL and German institutions, while the Ambassador emphasised the importance of these connections and expressed her satisfaction with the numerous collaborations and the presence of German students in Slovenia.

    Public hearings for the University of Ljubljana rector elections

    The public hearings for the candidates in the University of Ljubljana (UL) rector elections for the 2025–2029 term will take place between 11 and 19 March 2025. The candidates for the election on 2 April 2025 are Prof. Dr Metka Tekavčič, nominated by the UL School of Business and Economics, Prof. Dr Irena Mlinarič Raščan, nominated by the UL Faculty of Pharmacy, and Prof. Dr Gregor Majdič, nominated by the UL Veterinary Faculty.

    UL Senate adopts amendments to the Rules on the Selection and Funding of Young Researchers

    On Tuesday, 18 February 2025, at its 35th regular session, the Senate of the University of Ljubljana (UL) adopted amendments to the Rules on the Selection and Funding of Young Researchers, which simplify the selection process for young researchers, ensure full-time employment for researchers in this position, and provide clearer guidelines on funding.

    How do snow leopards communicate among themselves and how can such knowledge help monitoring of these elusive cats?

    Snow leopards use at least seven different behaviours for communication and most often leave scant messages in narrow gorges by scraping and urine marking. These are among the results of a new study by international team of researchers that took place in the Altai mountains of Mongolia and was led by Biotechnical Faculty from University of Ljubljana. New insights will be used to improve the efficiency of camera-trapping monitoring.

    Serious Game Reduces Victim Blaming and Encourages Reporting of Cyber Violence

    A study conducted by the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Ljubljana has shown that serious games can play a significant role in preventing cyber violence. Young people who participated in the educational program were less likely to blame victims after the workshops and became more aware of the importance of reporting cyber violence. However, the results also indicate that many young people lack knowledge on how and where to report such incidents.

    Candidates for the rector elections 2025–2029 are announced

    In accordance with the decision on initiating the election process for the Rector of the UL for the 2025–2029 term, the senates of the University’s member faculties had until 12 noon on Thursday, 20 February 2025, to submit their reasoned proposals for Rector candidates to the University of Ljubljana’s Electoral Commission.

    Researchers and company representatives from 18 countries on Food, Bioeconomy, Natural Resources, Agriculture, and a Clean Environment for a Healthy Life

    As part of the KRPAN project, the University of Ljubljana organized a networking event on 13 February 2025, titled "Food, Bioeconomy, Natural Resources, Agriculture, and a Clean Environment for a Healthy Life." The event was attended by over 80 researchers, research consultants, and company representatives from 18 European countries. In addition to Slovenian participants, the event was also attended by researchers and company representatives from Albania, Armenia, Belgium, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, France, Croatia, Italy, Kosovo, Latvia, Lithuania, Hungary, Romania, North Macedonia, Portugal, Serbia, and Tunisia.

Answers to these questions are provided by a study, which included Professor Dr. Matej Černe from the School of Economics and Business at the University of Ljubljana, analyzing over 66,000 discussions on the Reddit forum Digital Nomad.

    University of Ljubljana welcomes the introduction of Science Day

    The Government has adopted a proposed new amendment to the Public Holidays and Work-off Days in the Republic of Slovenia Act, introducing Science Day as a new public holiday to be observed on 10 November. The initiative was proposed by the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts, the Rectors' Conference of the Republic of Slovenia – of which the University of Ljubljana is a member – the Coordination of Independent Research Institutes of Slovenia, the Slovenian Academy of Engineering, and the Slovenian Medical Academy.

    The Provincial Mansion, home of the University of Ljubljana, to shine in its restored historic appearance

    The Provincial Mansion, home to the University of Ljubljana, is undergoing a façade renovation that will restore its historical appearance. The building, protected by the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of Slovenia (ZVKDS), will keep its original character while receiving the necessary restoration work. The renovation, which began last September, is expected to be completed by the end of April 2025.
