Frequently asked questions about exercising the rights of students at the University of Ljubljana
Parallel study programmes

https://www.uni-lj.si/studij/osnovne_informacije/vzporedni-studij

WHEN CAN A STUDENT ENROL IN PARALLEL STUDY PROGRAMNES?

First-cycle or fast-track master's students may enrol in another programme after successfully completing their first year if they meet the parallel studies enrolment requirements. Parallel studies enrolment (first cycle or fast-track master's programme) is not possible after completion of the last year or during thesis year.

Second- or third-cycle students may enrol in parallel study programmes without restrictions.

CAN STUDENTS ENROL IN PARALLEL STUDY PROGRAMMES AT THE UNIVERSITY OF LJUBLJANA IF THEY ARE ALREADY ENROLLED AT ANOTHER UNIVERSITY (UNIVERSITY OF PRIMORSKA, UNIVERSITY OF MARIBOR, UNIVERSITY OF NOVA GORICA, A UNIVERSITY ABROAD)?

Being enrolled in parallel studies means you simultaneously study in at least two academic programmes at the University of Ljubljana. If you already study at a different university, this is not a parallel study programme.

CAN STUDENTS ENROL IN PARALLEL STUDY PROGRAMMES DURING THEIR THESIS YEAR?

Parallel study enrolment (first cycle or fast-track master's programme) is not possible after completion of the last year or during thesis year.
Second- or third-cycle students may enrol in parallel study programmes without restrictions.

CAN STUDENTS ENROL IN PARALLEL STUDY PROGRAMMES EVEN THOUGH THEY HAVE REPEATED A YEAR IN THEIR FIRST PROGRAMME?

Yes.

CAN A SECOND-CYCLE STUDENT ENROL SIMULTANEOUSLY IN A FIRST-CYCLE PROGRAMME?

Second-cycle students may enrol in parallel study programmes without restrictions. To enrol in a first-cycle programme, students are required to submit proof of meeting the enrolment requirements. In addition, they are required to pay tuition for the first-cycle programme in accordance with the fourth paragraph of Article 77 of the Higher Education Act (ZVIS; previous graduation from a programme in the same cycle).

CAN A THIRD-CYCLE STUDENT ENROL SIMULTANEOUSLY IN A FIRST- OR SECOND-CYCLE PROGRAMME?

Yes.

CAN STUDENTS ENROLL IN PARALLEL STUDY PROGRAMMES FOR FREE IF THEY HAVE ALREADY SWITCHED PROGRAMMES?

First- or second-cycle students may enrol full-time in parallel study programmes without paying tuition if they have not already graduated from a programme in the same cycle. They pay tuition in accordance with the Rules on Fees and Cost Assessment at the University of Ljubljana (Available at: https://www.uni-lj.si/studij/cenik-storitev/).

ARE FIRST- OR SECOND-CYCLE STUDENTS REQUIRED TO PAY FOR PARALLEL STUDY PROGRAMMES IF THEY HAVE ALREADY GRADUATED FROM A PROGRAMME IN THE SAME CYCLE?

They need to start paying tuition when they complete their first programme because, in accordance with the Higher Education Act (ZVIS), tuition is required to be paid by students who have already graduated from a programme in the same cycle they are enrolled in.
They pay tuition in accordance with the Rules on Fees and Cost Assessment at the University of Ljubljana.

MAY STUDENTS WHO INTERRUPT ONE PROGRAMME KEEP THEIR STUDENT STATUS IN THE OTHER PROGRAMME AS PART OF THEIR PARALLEL STUDIES?

Students retain their student status as long as they are enrolled in at least one year or an additional (thesis) year of an academic programme. Because parallel studies involve two completely separate programmes, students can exercise all the rights arising from their student status in both programmes. Even if they interrupt one programme and progress as normal to the next year in the other programme, they retain their student status in both programmes. The same applies if they complete their primary programme, but not yet their second programme (and thus continue to study in the second programme). Students may also decide to leave one programme and only complete the other (regardless of which was originally their "primary" programme).
